CULTURAL ARTS AND RECREATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE
January 24, 2006
A regular meeting of the Cultural Arts and Advisory Committee was held Tuesday, January 24, 2006, in
the Adele Grage Cultural Center. Present were Chair Rusty Pritchett, Linda Ginsberg, Katherine Love,
Alicia Paley, Laurie Melancon, Ray Coleman, Margie Reeves, guest Julie Dias, and Parks and Recreation
Director Timmy Johnson. Ingrid McCawley and Darrell Prather were absent.
1. Call to Order
Chair Rusty Pritchett called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m.
2. Approval of the Minutes December 15 2005
A motion was made by Committee Member Linda Ginsberg, seconded by Committee
Member Alicia Paley to approve the minutes of December 15, 2005. The motion was
carried unanimously.
3. Old Business
a) Events/Programs
i) Songwriter's Concert
Darrel Prather was not present to give a report.
ii) Art Festival
Linda reported that she had received three packages from Artists agreeing to
participate. She also emailed a request for news articles & committee members
corrected or adjusted the article. Margie was asked to collect press kits from all
Artists. Emily at KYDS will be sponsoring one of the kid's activity tables.
Linda will meet with Robin Sheppard concerning the T-shirt art and the art for
the posters.
iii) Shakespeare in the Park
Two performances are set, Saturday, June 3, at 7:30 p.m. & Sunday, June 4, at
2:00 p.m. The play is under the direction of Pam Montalone, who is a Professor
at the University of North Florida. Turtle Island Market will provide gourmet
picnic baskets for purchase. Linda has put together an article for distribution.
Rusty introduced New President of the Teen Council Julie Dias.
iv) Working Warrior
Timmy informed the committee that an email was sent out that the Working
Warrior program is up and running. The funds came from the Committee's
discretion budget.
v) Mayport Middle & Atlantic Beach Elementary
The check for the Choral Program at Mayport Middle hasn't been issued to the
school. There have been some internal issues in the finance department that will
be resolved in the next week and the check will be issued. AB Elementary has
after school enrichment programs in progress, and they have been a success.
b) AB Public Art Committee Update
The committee did not meet.
c) Teen Council
All new officers have been elected into office. Kathy and Julie gave a list of events Teen
Council would like to organize. The "Winter Music Fest" to be held on February 1 1,
2006, and other events such as a movie night, acoustic night, the scholarship writing
contest will be planned for later in the year. Kathy agreed. the Teen Council would assist
Margie in the planning of a Skate Competition to be held in May.
4) New Business
Laurie discussed the Committee funding an after school program called "BOT Ball" at Mayport
Middle. She spoke to the teacher Mr. Lanehart, and he needs assistance funding this program.
Timmy agreed to research the budget to see if there are available funds, and Laurie will get the
details of the cost then both would update the Committee at the next meeting.
5) Other
Alicia went over the details of the cycle ride she is organizing. She has mapped out the route,
which consists of mainly back roads and wants to pass out stamps to represent each location the
participants visit. Timmy suggests AB Police would volunteer to assist the families crossing at
Mayport Road. Alicia will follow up with Timmy on picking a date and the details of the cycle
route.
