Royal Palms Washout; The reconstruction of the sewer and storm water systems in the Royal
Palms Subdivision has been discussed during budget planning sessions and in strategic planning for
at least a couple of years. It will undoubtedly be a subject discussed in strategic planning later this
month. A street collapse occurred in that subdivision earlier this month that provides a good picture
of what is happening in some of the storm drain lines. In some portions of the lines, the original
corrugated metal pipe is rusted completely away. When that happens, dirt often rushes in during
rain flow events which in turn undermines backyards, or, in this case, the city street. Pictures of
both the street collapse and the pipe are attached. While this is an example of some of the worst
conditions in the Royal Palms area, most of the storm water pipes are in better condition. The
city's ten year plan for capital improvements calls for the replacement of the storm drain system in
the Royal Palm Subdivision in four phases.
