AGENDA ITEM: Approve the recommendation of the Cultural Arts and
Recreation Advisory Committee to donate $1000 to the
Fletcher High School Band to assist with their travel
expenses to Washington, DC.

BACKGROUND: On February 25a', Cindy Bohn, Fletcher High School Band
Boosters made a request for $3,000 to the City Commission
on behalf of the Fletcher High School Band. These funds
would assist the Band with their travel to Washington, DC
so they can participate in the 2008 National Independence
Day Parade.
The City Commission forwazded the request to the Cultural
Arts and Recreation Advisory Committee for their
recommendation.
The Committee met on Tuesday, February 26~' and
recommended that the City donate $1,000 to the Fletcher
High School Band Boosters to assist with the band's travel
to D.C. for the competition.
BUDGET: Funds available within the Recreation & Special Events
Account 001-6010-572.49-01.
RECOMMENDATION: Approve the recommendation of the Cultural Arts and
Recreation Advisory Committee to assist the Fletcher High
School Band with a donation of $1,000 towards its travel
expenses to Washington, D.C. in July for the 2008 National
Independence Day Parade.

It is cnmch time. we bacve less than two weeks to visa or have pledged the additional
funds that we need to make tltis dream beca9me a reality for out students. We have tailed
approximptelx 538,000 of the 550,000 cost of the trip, leaving us about 512,000 shy of
our goal Tllir rs not jwt another band trip. This is a Dace is a lifetime opportaaity
our local school to tepteseut the bcacdua, Jacksonville amd Florida on a nativmel level.
We treed to make dais happen! And to do so, we raced your help.
We era at a adtical point im o~u fimdraisiwg efforts if we are going to make this trip a
reality for Fletcher. for Jacksom-ille and for the State of Florida. Our chilcke~a/band
participatxts are a great example of the positive outcomes of public education, and
Fletcher has an oatstwading track record for participation and excellence im perforrming
arts programs. This is a great opportunity for us to slsowcaae the talents, spirit sad
achievements o£ our edidemta, but we cam't do so without the finaiacial support of the
community.
The issue maw is that our clock is ticking and we brave minimal time to achieve our goal.
Our studa~ats are heavily involved it, eompetitioas, ein:iculmn rec~uirernerrts, SAT amd
PSA,'T, and FCA'I' and are mot in a position to walk the aaeighborhoods ar ~ car
washes and weelcead fumrhaisers. We an in critical aced of support and hope that
makigg specific requests will help us raise the funds accessary to put ourchildren -our
bsad -our commwoity - in'DC iun Jtily.
l am asking your help in a very specific way - Please make a 53,000 donatiom to tBis
wotthwhite cause. Our students sad theiuc families have already paid a pocdom o£tbue cost
for each iadividuai student. We have pledged m sat make fiaainces and obstacle to atl of '
