Item 4DAGENDA ITEM # 4D APRIL 14, 2008 CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH CITY COMMISSION MEETING STAFF REPORT AGENDA: Approve Designated Streets for the Tree Planting Program SUBMITTED BY: Rick Carper, P.E., Public Works Director ~--~ DATE: April 7, 2008 BACKGROUND: The City implemented a tree planting program in 2002 to assist with maintaining the tree canopy and beauty of the City. We have installed over 600 trees on the right-of--way areas and parks throughout the City over the past several years. This year staff proposes to offer oak, drake elm, crape myrtle and holly trees for homeowners to plant in the following areas: Mayport Corridor: George Street, Rose Street, Orchid Street, W. 1St Street, W Stn Street, W. Stn Street, and Francis Ave. ; Seaspray area: Nautical Blvd, Vikings Lane, Seaspay Ave., Helmsmen Lane, Buoy Lane. In addition, the City will offer new trees for adoption by residents at all locations where dead /dying bay trees have been removed from the right of way (9 trees). If insufficient homeowners volunteer to adopt trees to meet the desired total, Staff will plant and maintain oak, drake elm and holly trees in the City Right of Way in the proposed areas. In addition, the City will plant and maintain trees at the Stocks and Violet Street cul de sacs at bike paths and along Sandpiper Lane. BUDGET: Funds for this program are in the Tree Replacement Fund, account number 112-6020-537-3400, with $9500 allocated for this year. The tree(s) will be planted on the right of way or on private property within ten feet of the right of way and we are asking the homeowners and renters to assist with maintaining the tree(s). I will be willing to maintain tree(s) based on the following list of requirements: ^ Watering-Fill the ring at the base of the tree(s) completely 3 times a week, for o ths. ^ Fix water ring if damaged ^ Keep Mulched ^ Keep trimmed ^ Fertilize once yearly with one cup of 6-6-6, 8-8-8, or 10-10-10 tree fertilizer, found at your local hardware store. ^ Please keep in mind this maintenance is for the life of the tree.
