AGENDA ITEM: Tank Cleaning at Wastewater Treatment Plants

BACKGROUND: Over time, fine sand collects in wastewater treatment tanks. The sand takes up
valuable treatment area in the tank and can cause operational problems as well as wear and tear on the
equipment. In late FY07, the Commission approved using the City's annual Utility Contractor,
Gruhn May, Inc. to perform tank cleaning at some of the tanks in Wastewater Plant # 1 (1100
Sandpiper Lane). Additional funds were budgeted to complete the sand removal for remaining tanks
at Wastewater Plant #1 and at Wastewater Plant #2 (739 Renault).
City staff estimates that removing the sand from the additional treatment tanks will take at least ten
10-hour days.
We requested a quote from the City's Annual Utility Contractor, Gruhn May, Inc. to perform the
work based on the contractor's bid hourly rates for equipment and work crews. The daily cost is
$3,240 per day, for a total project cost of $32,400.
BUDGET: A total of $100,000 was budgeted for wastewater tank cleaning in the Sewer Fund under
account number 410-5508-535-46-00.
RECOMMENDATION: Authorize the City's annual utility contractor, Gruhn May, Inc. to perform
Tank Cleaning at Wastewater Treatment Plants for a total of $32,400.
