CULTURAL ARTS AND RECREATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE
CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH
Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, May 27, 2008
Adele Grage Cultural Center
7:00 P.M
Present: Laurie Melancon. Chris Garrard, Lori Gaglione, Avery Goelz, Jolyn Johnson, John Longbottom, Ingrid McCawley,
Lynn Roskein, Hiatt Woods, Tim Johnson (city liaison), Karen Kempf (recording).
Absent: Mark Howard. Guests: Libby Marsh, Josh Covelli, Dawson Pickett, John Goelz.
1. The meeting was announced and a quorum established. Chair Laurie Melancon called the
meeting to order at 7:03.
2. The committee reviewed the meeting minutes from Apri126, 2008. John moved that the minutes
be accepted with one change as noted. Hiatt seconded the motion and the minutes were
unanimously approved.
3. New Business
a. Josh Covelli asked for support for a new summer lacrosse clinic at Mayport Middle
School for children ages 7 & older. He mentioned several ways the committee could help
support the program: $1200 is needed to get the program started; fertilization of the
playing field; purchase of lacrosse sticks; and a link on website to the lacrosse program.
The committee discussed the request but could not offer financial help this summer since
their budget is already committed through September 2008.
b. John Goelz addressed the committee and announced that he would be continuing as the
Teen Council advisor. He thanked the committee for their support the past year and
hoped that the Teen Council will continue since it gives students a chance to volunteer
and gain community service hours. He said that Madie O'Conor will be the new
President. Dawson Pickett provided the committee with a list of teen council members
and contact phone numbers.
c. Libby Marsh introduced herself to the committee as new to the beaches area. She is a
dance educator and starting a dancers' ensemble in creative movement. She works mainly
with children and in schools.
4. Ongoing Business
a. Events and Updates
i. Arts in the Park - Jolyn reported that Arts in the Park was extremely successful.
Twelve artist & volunteer surveys were returned to date. Letters have been sent
to volunteers thanking them. A full report of surveys will be complete in two
weeks. Jolyn asked Lynn to work with her next year
ii. Songwriters' Concert & Acoustic Night -John reported on the previous month's
concerts and also confirmed dates for the programs for the rest of the year.
iii. Teen Council -Avery & Hiatt are graduating and `retiring' from the committee.
The committee thanked them for their services the past year.
S. New business
a. Budget Cut Recommendations -Tim asked the committee to make some
recommendations, if the city manager asks for additional cuts. The committee made the
following suggestions:
i. Teen Council volunteered to cut their budget to $1000; discretionary funds to
$1000; mailing $1000; and Marshfest ($2700) may possibly be dropped.
b. Volunteer Appreciation -Tim announced that a volunteer appreciation event is set for
August 29`~ at Adele Grage. He asked that all committee members return the Volunteer
Information forms for themselves and any other volunteers that have worked on events.
Karen will send out the form to committee members in a word document.
6. Other Agenda Items
a. The August Tuesday meeting is moved to Wednesday, August 27`x, 7 p.m. since
Elections are being held at Adele Grage on the 26~'.
b. Jolyn asked that all committee members receive Arts in the Park shirts (John, Ingrid,
Laurie)
7. Without further business, the chair adjourned the meeting at 7:47 p.rn.
