AGENDA ITEM: Sulfur Dioxide for Wastewater Treatment Plants

BACKGROUND: Sulfur dioxide is used at the City's two wastewater treatment plants for
dechlorinating the effluent, per DEP requirements.
Bids were advertised and invitations sent to seven vendors. Only one bid was received, from
Brenntag Mid-South, Inc. Many chemical vendors have reduced the distance to which they will
deliver, or cut back on the number of chemicals they supply.
The bid price was:

This represents an 82% increase over the current price. The increased price is due to the
supplier's increased cost for raw materials and fuel
BUDGET: A total of $15,000 was budgeted for sulfur dioxide in the Sewer Fund in account
number 410-5508-535-5200. Since we are more than mid-way through the fiscal year, we should
be able absorb the cost increase and remain within budget.
RECOMMENDATION: Award the annual contract for Sulfur Dioxide Bid No. 0708-10 to
Brenntag Mid-South, Inc. at the bid price of $850 per ton.
