RESOLUTION NO: 08-09
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH, FLORIDA,
URGING THE DUVAL COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD TO APPROVE
MAYPORT MIDDLE SCHOOL FOR 300 "GIFTED AND
ACADEMICALLY TALENTED" MAGNET SEATS
WHEREAS, the City of Atlantic Beach has recognized that re-development of the Mayport Road
residential and business areas are its highest priority; and
WHEREAS, Mayport Middle School is the primary middle school for the children of Atlantic
Beach and having a vibrant and dynamic school will attract our best and brightest, as well as serve all area
children, including the children of our Naval personnel at Mayport Naval Station; and
WHEREAS, the enrollment at Mayport Middle School has dropped over the last several years
from a high of 1200 to fewer than 700 at this time; and
WHEREAS, a magnet designation will attract additional students, thereby increasing enrollment,
enhancing school efficiency which will also reduce the current subsidy of approximately $300,000 per
school year and assist with diversifying the socioeconomics of the student population; and
WHEREAS, Mayport Middle School has gifted teachers and an excellent full time gifted
program in place; and
WHEREAS, along with the "Gifted and AT" elementary school at Jacksonville Beach
Elementary, the beaches would offer a beaches magnet tract and further encourage parents to keep their
children closer to home, reducing travel time and enhancing parent participation in the school experience.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Atlantic Beach Commission strongly
encourages the Duval County School Board to authorize and approve 300 "Gifted and Academically
Talented" magnet seats to Mayport Middle School.
