10-25-94 v NOTES FROM MEETING HELD IN CITY HALL CONFERENCE ROOM AT 10:00 AM ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1994. PRESENT: Lyman T. Fletcher, Mayor Robert G. Weiss, Commissioner Patricia Goelz, Recreation Advisory Board Member Cynthia Corey, Recreation Advisory Board Member Barbara Hopson, Recreation Advisory Board Member Kim Leinbach, City Manager Jim Jarboe, Deputy City Manager Herrick N. Smith, Chairman, Dept. of Landscape Architecture, University of Florida Maureen King, City Clerk The meeting, which was held for the purpose of meeting with Dr. Smith relative to the development of a master plan for the city' s parks, was called to order by Mayor Fletcher. The Mayor gave a brief overview of the parks and how each of the parks was utilized. Following discussion, Dr. Smith felt his department at the University of Florida could be helpful. He felt the city needed to develop a good marketing plan for outdoor recreation and open space usage and suggested the use of street markings and signage to better promote the parks. Commissioner Weiss felt the beach had enormous potential and was under used. Discussion ensued relative to property which abutted the Intracoastal Waterway which the city was hoping to purchase and it was felt following the acquisition of this property, the city would be eligible for Inland Waterway grants. Dr. Smith explained how his students would survey the area, reach conclusions and make recommendations. He felt he might have students who could undertake this project during the next semester and he indicated he would instruct them to develop a parks system rather than addressing each park in a piecemeal fashion. He indicated his staff may wish to meet with the Recreation Advisory Board and felt that board members or citizens could be helpful in collecting data relative to the number of people using the parks, traffic, etc. Following further discussion Dr. Smith indicated he would present his proposal to the city within ten days and estimated his costs would be between $3, 000.00 and $5, 000.00. There being no further discussion, the Mayor declared the meeting adjourned. Maureen King City Clerk
