AGENDA ITEM: Donner Park Proposed Improvements

BACKGROUND: In October, the Commission approved Staffs proposed
improvements for Donner Park as part of the FY 2008 - 2009 Community
Development Block Grant (CDBG) Programs. These improvements include two
tennis courts with fencing and lighting, covered shelters & benches, storage shed,
drinking fountain and sod /irrigation. The proposed court location will involve
removal of 50+ trees (mostly older pine and scrub oak) which will be replaced on
site, using native hardwoods and shade trees. The location will also entail removal /
relocation of the small basketball court which will be relocated closer to the
playground and community center. This location for the tennis courts was chosen to
minimize impact on open fields currently used for flag football and soccer programs.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends the Commission approve the general layout
of the proposed improvements.

BUDGET: The Fiscal Year 08/09 CDBG Budget provides $147,000 for
Tennis Court and Park Improvements. Also included is $51,000 for construction of a
sidewalk and drainage improvements on George Street along the easterly edge of
Donner Park. The final authorized CDBG Grant has not been signed by Mayor
Peyton.
