In Recognition of the Distinguished Achievements of
George R. Olsen
WHEREAS, George Olsen was elected to serve as Mayor by the citizens of Atlantic Beach from
1963 to 1965, and gave most generously of his time, talents and energy to preserve the character and quality
of life in Atlantic Beach for the benefit of all the citizens; and
WHEREAS, George Olsen worked for the Gator Bowl for 37 years, the last 34 as Executive
Director; and
WHEREAS, George Olsen, elevated the game to national prominence with a tireless work ethic and
a congenial personality that built coast-to-coast contacts; and
WHEREAS, known as the "Gator Bowl Pioneer", George Olsen was credited by many with making
the Gator Bowl a holiday tradition on the First Coast and a respected bowl game nationwide; and
WHEREAS, George Olsen won the respect of his colleagues by the capable and effectual manner in
which he discharged the responsibilities of his official position as Executive Director and was instrumental
in providing interpretation of NCAA rules as they pertained to bowl games; and
WHEREAS, in 1961 George Olsen received the Jacksonville Area Jaycees Distinguished Service
Award and was chosen as "Young Man of the Year"; and
WHEREAS, George Olsen was honored for a lifetime of achievement in collegiate sports by
induction into the Florida Sports Hall of Fame and the Jacksonville Sports Hall of Fame; and
NOW THEREFORE, I, John S. Meserve, Mayor of the City of Atlantic Beach, Florida, do hereby
proclaim May 13'h as
GEORGE R. OLSENDAY
throughout the City of Atlantic Beach and on behalf of the City Commission hereby express our deep
appreciation for the many contributions of George Olsen and extend heartfelt gratitude on behalf of all
Atlantic Beach citizens.
