AGENDA ITEM: Request for Signs Indicating No Hanna Park Access from Seminole Road

BACKGROUND: A Commissioner requested that Staff investigate installation of signs at
the entrances to Atlantic Beach directing visitors to the appropriate routes for accessing
Hanna Park and Naval Station Mayport. The intent is to reduce the number of vehicles
attempting to reach these destinations by proceeding north on Seminole Road, finding
the road blocked and having to travel back through Atlantic Beach to find another route.
Eastbound Atlantic Blvd signage directing traffic to use the Flyover /Mayport is adequate
for directing travelers from the west. (See Attachment 1). For northbound travelers on
A1A / 3ro Street, additional signage could be posted on the southern ends of Sherry Drive
and Seminole Road directing visitors to use A1A to reach Hanna Park or Mayport Naval
Station (See Attachment 2 for proposed wording). There is an existing sign pointing to
A1A on the NW corner of the 5 Points Intersection which could be enlarged. (See
Attachment 3).
A contributing factor to traveler confusion may be that a number of on-line and print
mapping sources show the access to Hanna Park via Seminole Road as open (see
attachment 4). Staff will be contacting these reference sources to request correction of
their maps. Of note, when a `Trip-Tik' is obtained from AAA, it shows the correct route
for accessing the Park and Naval Station.
BUDGET: There are no funds budgeted for the requested signs, which are estimated to cost
$80 each (including staff time for assembly and installation). If directed to proceed, Staff
will procure signs using the Public Works operating budget
RECOMMENDATION: None. For Commission review /discussion only.
