AGENDA ITEM: Lt. James M. Christman Retirement

BACKGROUND:
Lt. James M. Christman has announced his retirement effective October 31, 2009. He
began his career with the city of Atlantic Beach Police Department in 1974. He has
served the city with distinction for 35 years during which he was assigned primarily to
the Patrol Division. He rose through the ranks being promoted to Sergeant and then in
1985 to Patrol Lieutenant. In addition to his duties in patrol he has been responsible for
recruitment and selection of police officers and administering the Neighborhood Watch
Program. He also became a certified physical fitness specialist and was responsible for
all in-house fitness and wellness testing. Most long term citizens know Lt. Christman
both by face and name. He is very well liked throughout the community and is known for
his excellent interpersonal and communication skills. He has had an outstanding career
in law enforcement, and he has provided an excellent example for other officers to
emulate.
In the past, when recommended by the Chief of Police, police officers taking a full
retirement have been awarded their badges and their duty pistols. In each case, the Police
Department has brought these matters to the City Commission to obtain Commission
approval. The purpose of this staff report is to seek approval to continue this tradition.
BUDGET: The price of a .40 caliber Glock Model 22 is approximately $414.00, and a
badge is approximately $118.00. Currently, the Police Department has spare pistols and
badges. The Police Department will not need to purchase replacement items in the near
future.
RECOMMENDATIONS: To approve awarding the .40 caliber Glock Model 22, Serial
Number LXP821, and the Lieutenant duty badge to Lieutenant James M. Christman.
