CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH
CITY COMMISSION MEETING
STAFF REPORT
AGENDA ITEM: National Marathon to Fight Breast Cancer -February 21, 2010
SUBMITTED BY: Jim Hanson, City Mana
DATE: January 20, 2010
BACKGROUND: The Marathon. to Fight Breast Cancer is scheduled for Sunday, February 21,
2010. This staff report is to provide information about the upcoming event.
This will be the third annual marathon held in Jacksonville and the beaches to
raise money to fight breast cancer. Presentations were made by Donna Deegan
and others in the last two years to the Atlantic Beach City Commission. The last
two events have gone very smoothly with an impressive level of community
support shown, particularly in Atlantic Beach. There has been relatively little
inconvenience to the public. This is largely because of the advanced publicity
done by event organizers.
The race course will be the same this year. For detailed course information, see
the attached "Event Summary" from the marathon organizers. One change this
year will be that the race will have five-person marathon relay teams. Race
organizers will provide transportation for relay team members at two of the five
relay points in Atlantic Beach.
Event staff has indicated that the number of entrants signing up for the events this
year is up from previous years with an estimated 8,500 to 10,000 total
participants. Most of those will run the half marathon course which does not go
through Atlantic Beach.. However, they estimate that 2,500 runners will sign up
for the marathon and approximately 500 participants will sign up for the relay
teams which will run the full marathon. course.
Staff from our Police Department have already met with marathon organizers and
representatives from the other beach cities and are planning for the event. It is
expected that at least one representative of the marathon organization will be in
attendance at the City Commission meeting on February 8`~' to answer any
questions that the Commission may have
BUDGET: There is no cost to the City for the event. Police overtime costs will be
reimbursed by the event organizers.
RECOMMENDATION: No action required. This report for information only.

Scope of the event
Course Information: The race will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, February 21, 2010
near the Mayor Clinic Campus in Jacksonville, Florida. Located near the beach, runners

and meander through the unique beach communities of Jacksonville Beach, Neptune
Beach and Atlantic Beach. Weather permitting, a 2.5-mile section will be run on the hard-
packed sand of this Florida coastline.
The race course will be open a total of 7 hours. Combining the marathon and half
marathon we expect to host 8,000 runners.
Supporting the Cause: Proceeds from the race will go directly to The Donna
Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to helping women with breast cancer.
While a portion of the proceeds will be used by The Donna Foundation for the critical
care of breast cancer survivors in need, the foundation has pledged to donate the
majority of funds raised to Mayo Clinic for research and its Multidisciplinary Breast Clinic,
which specializes in the detection and treatment of breast cancer.
