Dear Todd,
In the above referenced structure, a first floor wall is being removed in the master bedroom that r,,4uires,
per the engineering, a new 2-ply 14" LVL. During demolition, a 2-ply 2x10 was found to exist and be
constructed in such a way that removing would be hazardous to the overall structural integrity of the
building.
In lieu of the 14" LVL, it is acceptable to add four 1.75"x9.5" LVLs to the existing (2) 2x10. Fastening the
new 9.5" LVLs must be done with '/" through bolts at 12" o.c. max with 2" round washers and nuts at
each face of the new composite beam. The overall beam will be 4-plies of 9.5" LVL and the existing (2)
2x10. The plies may be fastened in any order to create the 6-ply composite, i.e., one ply to one side of
the (2) 2x10 and three on the other side, or 2-plies each side, or all four on one side. Field conditions
may dictate.
