This is a significant change affecting pool and electrical contractors. Therefore, all application requests after May 1, 2007 for pools and spas will require an equipotential bonding grid to be installed according to one of the following materials and method options. There are two MATERIAL OPTIONS for the construction of the bonding grid; (A) The use of structural steel rods (B) The use of # 8 AWG bare solid copper conductors There is no minimum size for the steel rods. The code specifies "reinforcing rods" thereby excluding wire mesh as the means for the bonding grid material. Wire mesh may be used as a means of concrete deck reinforcement. However, the bonding grid around the pool is required to be made of steel rods. Reinforcing steel is limited to installation in poured concrete. Solid copper wire is required when buried in the sand/soil under a brick or paving deck type surface. There are three METHOD OPTIONS for construction of the bonding grid; (A) The structural steel grid shall be arranged in 'a 12 inch by 12 .inch network of steel rods in a uniformly spaced perpendicular grid pattern with a tolerance of four inches. When fabricating the grid the maximum size of a grid square is 16 inches by 16 inches. (B) The copper grid shall be arranged in a 12 inch by 12 inch network of copper conductors in a uniformly spaced perpendicular grid pattern with a tolerance of four inches. When fabricating the grid the maximum size of a grid is 16 iuwhes by 16 inches. _ (C) At least one minimum # 8 AWG bare solid copper conductor shall follow the contour of the perimeter surface of the pool. The required conductor shall be 18 inches to 24 inches from the inside walls of the pool. The required conductor shall be installed below the paved surface. A paved surface shall include but not be limited to; concrete, tile, brick pavers, Chicago brick, marble, terrazzo, flat stone or any other hard masonry-like surface whether poured in place or bedded in sand other material. Paved surfaces covered with sealer, paint, protective coatings, carpet, etc: remain a paved surface and equire a bonding grid. Non paved surfaces are grass, loose stone, gravel, wood or plastic composit decking and do not require a bonding grid- Grids fabricated out of structural steel rods shall be tied together at every crossing with typical steel wires. Grids fabricated out of copper conductors shall be terminated at each crossing by exothermic welding, listed pressure connectors, listed clamps or other listed means. The vertical steel rods from the pool shell do not have to be bent over and tied into the bonding grid. However, when using the # 8 AWG bare solid copper bonding jumpers they shall be installed in at least four locations equally spaced around the perimeter of the pool or spa to connect the pool shell to the steel or copper bonding grid. The bonding grid shall be inspected at the Deck Inspection, before the pavers are installed or the concrete is poured. AN ADDITIONAL INSPECTION IS NOT REQUIRED.
