Hybrid Vehicle being used for Police Patrol; The Atlantic Beach Police Department has outfitted the
first hybrid vehicle to be used for police patrol. The Department already owns four other hybrid vehicles,
all of which have been assigned for administrative use. These are being used to reduce fuel cost and to
test applicability for use in other city departments.
Alcohol De to ment; The Police Department conducted an additional alcohol deployment on Friday,
June 3r to check area businesses for possible sales of alcohol to minors. Thirteen businesses were
checked with only one selling alcohol; the Hanna Park Food Store at 501 Mayport Road. Consequently,

checked which is quite favorable compared with ratios of 33% and above when the alcohol deployments

PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release
Date: May 26th, 2010
In an effort to reduce fuel consumption and expense, the Atlantic Beach Police
Department has just purchased its fifth hybrid vehicle. A 2010 Ford Escape
hybrid is in its final stages of being outfitted with all of the usual police
accessories; police decals, blue lights, siren, police radio, and a caged
compartment in the back to transport prisoners. Once finished, the vehicle will
serve as a patrol vehicle and will be assigned to one of the department's patrol
Sergeant's to drive on a daily basis while working.
Atlantic Beach Police Department purchased its first hybrid vehicle in 2008. That
vehicle is driven by the Chief of Police, Mike Classey. In 2009, three hybrid
Chevrolet Malibu's were added to the fleet, all of which are driven by the
department's Lieutenants. The 2010 Ford Escape will be the first hybrid vehicle
utilized as a marked patrol car. Until this point, all of the hybrid vehicles were
driven by officers in Administration, and did not have the usual police striping on
them. They maintained an average of 24-30 miles per gallon each month,
compared to 10-15 miles per gallon on the patrol vehicles. This inspired the City
to explore options to put hybrid vehicles in patrol.
The new marked hybrid police vehicle will be in service within the next two
weeks.
