Dear Mr. Hofstetler 3~ ~ a~ ~ ~, The owner of the subject residence has chosen to use 6 '/2" thick R- Control SIPP wall system for all the exterior walls in lieu of the originally called out 2x framing with conventional OSB sheathing. The R-Control SIPS are made of two layers of '/z" plywood wall sheathing adhesively bonded to expanded 5 '/z" thick polystyrene rigid insulation; thus, forming 6'/z" thick sandwich wall panels. The system had been load tested (see attachment for "Load Design Charts" prepared by manufacturer) for axial, shear, and transverse loading and will derive uplift load capacity for one story walls without the use of conventional metal strapping or threaded steel ties because of the continuity of the sheathing from top plate to bottom shoe plate. However, metal uplift strapping will be needed at two story walls because of the discontinuous sheathing at floor level. See attachment "7" for typ. One story wall panel and attachment " 2" and " 3"for two story/ floor to floor strapping. After reviewing the materials and the product data, I have concluded the R- Control SIPS may be used to substitute the originally called out wall framing for the subject structure and will successfully resist the design gravity and wind toads shown in the design criteria .
