BUILDING OFFICIAL BASIC RULE S OF VINYL SIDING APPLICATION App ROVED CITYBUIIDINGNOFFICEACH i JAN 2 3 2006 1. Fasten approximately in center of slot. 2. Do not fasten too tightly or too loosely. Allow 1/32" clearance be- tween the fastener head and the siding panel. 3. Do not face nail/staple. 4. Leave a minimum of 1/4" clearance at all openings and stops to allow for normal expansion and contraction. When installing in tem- peratures below 32°F, increase minimum clearance to 3/8". 5. Do not force panels up or down when fastening in position. Allow them to hang without strain. &. Installed panel must move freely from side to side. 7. Do not caulk panels where they meet the receiver of inside corners, outside corners or J-trim. Do not caulk overlap joints. 3 I --► .-- 1/4"for expansion 4. INSIDE CORNER POST: The applica- 1 r4"space at top of wall tion of the inside corner post is the same as that for the outside corner post, and the same care should be used. BOTH TYPES OF CORNER POSTS are installed before the siding is applied. Having these items plumb is particularly important. Make certain the corner post is installed square. J.CHANNEL 5. WINDOW & DOOR TRIM f Trim BEND OVER J-channel is used around windows and 4s°CUT doors to receive siding. Side J-channel CUT APPROX. WIDTH members are cut longer than the height OF NAIL FLANGE of the window or door, and notched at the top as shown. Miter cut the free flange at a 450 angle and bend tab J CHANNEL down to provide flashing over side members. It is recommended to caulk around windows and doors before in- stalling trim pieces. Flashing To further prevent water from getting behind siding, a flashing piece is cut from coil stock and slipped under the base of the side J-channel members and positioned so as to lap over the top lock of the panel below (see sketch). 2 Flash around windows and doors as required. FLASHING 6. GABLE END TRIM Before applying siding, J-channel should be installed to receive siding at the gable ends. Where the left and right sections meet at the gable peak, let one of the sections butt into the peak with the other section overlapping. A miter cut is made on the face flange of this piece for better appearance. All old paint build-up should be removed be- fore installing J-channels. Fasten J-channel every 6" to 12". 14 SECTION 07464 MASTIC VINYL SIDING C Mastic Premium Siding BY ALCOA For best results, display hidden notes to specifier. PART 1 GENERAL 1.1 SECTION INCLUDES A. Figure 24 (see Figure 25). • Install replacement panel by locking into course below, then nailing according to "NAILING PROCEDURES". • Using a Hook& Cotter Pin Puller Tool (NAPA Auto Parts No. 3470 or equiva- lent), start at the left end of the panel, and begin locking the panel above to the new installed panel (see Figure 26). NOTE: For best results, engage 3"4"of lock at a time, continuing from left to right along Figure 25 the length of the panel. Figure 26 Fl-61 i CEDAR DISCOVERY INSTALLATION Compensating for Lumber Shrinkage Lumber Shrinkage is a term used to describe a condition that may possibly cause Cedar Discovery to become unlocked. In new construction applications, when sheet rock or drywall is applied after the Cedar Discovery product has been installed, the added weight can cause compression of the studs (shrinkage), and force the product to unlock. This will generally occur at the "band board"(floor joist) in a two-story construction, or at the starting course on a single-story home. A modified Vinyl Repair Shrink Clip (VRSC) can assist in repairing Cedar Discovery panels that have become unlocked due to these cir- cumstances. (see Figure 27). Figure 27 NOTE: The Shrink Clip is modified by removing the return leg (radius) at the bottom of VRSC product. (See Figure 28). Remove Return Leg Figure 28 Snap modified vinyl repair shrink clip (VRSC) into the top lock of the panel beneath the panel that has become unlocked. Use one (1) shrink clip for each Cedar Discovery panel. (see Figure 29). Figure 29 continued on next page 11 CEDAR DISCOVERY INSTALLATION Compensating for Lumber Shrinkage - continued • Once shrink clip has been snapped in place (see Figure 30), re-engage the unlocked Cedar Discovery panel by using a Hook & Cotter Pin Puller Tool (NAPA Auto Parts No. 3470 or equivalent) (see Figure 30). Refer to section titled "Replacing a Damaged Panel"for locking procedure. Figure 30 • The panel should be secure, and from a distance, appear just as it did when first installed. (see Figure 31). 6. Installed panel must move freely from side to side. 7. Do not caulk panels where they meet the receiver of inside corners, outside corners or Prim. Do not caulk overlap joints. 3 —► -•—1/4"for expansion J 4. INSIDE CORNER POST: The applica- tion of the inside corner post is the 1 r4"space at top of wall same as that for the outside corner post, and the same care should be used. BOTH TYPES OF CORNER POSTS are installed before the siding is applied. Having these items plumb is particularly important. Make certain the corner post is installed square. J-CHANNEL 5. WINDOW & DOOR TRIM ` Trim BEND OVER J-channel is used around windows and 45°CUT doors to receive siding. Side J-channel CUT APPROX. WIDTH members are cut longer than the height OF NAIL FLANGE of the window or door, and notched at the top as shown. Miter cut the free flange at a 45° angle and bend tab J-CHANNEL down to provide flashing over side members. It is recommended to caulk around windows and doors before in- stalling trim pieces. Flashing To further prevent water from getting behind siding, a flashing piece is cut s from coil stock and slipped under the base of the side J-channel members , and positioned so as to lap over the top ` lock of the panel below (see sketch). 2" Flash around windows and doors as required. FLASHING 6. GABLE END TRIM Before applying siding, J-channel should be installed to receive siding at the gable ends. Where the left and right sections meet at the gable peak, let one of the sections butt into the peak with the other section overlapping. A miter cut is made on the face flange of this piece for better appearance. All old paint build-up should be removed be- e fore installing J-channels. Fasten J-channel every 6" to 12". 14 + FROM :FL GA CONTRACTORS FAX NO. :904 642 9156 Jan. 17 2006 10:36AM P3 Florida Building Code,2004 Complete Collection 1406.13 Vinyl aiding.
