Q' SECTION 2801 - GENERAL REQUIREMENTS 2801.1 The quality,design, fabrication, and erection of aluminum used in buildings or structures shall conform to good engineering practice,the provisions set forth herein,and other applicable requirements of THE STANDARD BUILDING CODE. 2801.2 The Building Official may require that any structure using aluminum primary or secondary members be designed by a Professional Engineer. He may also require written calculations. 2801.3 The A.A.F ALUMINUM CONSTRUCTION MANUAL (A.C.M.), The Aluminum Construction Manual, SPECIFICATIONS FOR ALUMINUM STRUCTURES, A.A., and the ALUMINUM FORMED SHEET BUILDING SHEATHING DESIGN GUIDE, A.A. are hereby adopted and set forth as the Standard. 2801.4 The principle materials to which these specifications apply shall be aluminum alloys registered with the A.A. 2801.5 The use of aluminum alloys, other than those registered, shall provide performance not less than those required by the Standard and as set forth herein. 2801.6 Any specified minimum thickness of extruded aluminum shall be the total thickness of the member including paint or protective coating and is subject to a 10% ± mill tolerance. 2801.7 Any specified minimum thickness of aluminum coil shall be the total thickness of the sheet including paint or other protective coating and is subject to a two thousandths (0.002) of an inch mill tolerance. SECTION 2802 - DEFINITIONS Words and terms in this section are defined for the purpose of this code only. Words and terms not defined herein shall be construed to be as generally used. A.A. - The Aluminum Association, Inc. 818 Connecticut Avenue Northwest, Washington, D.C. 20006 A.A.F. -Aluminum Association of Florida, Inc. 323 Industrial Avenue, Port Richey, Florida 33568 A.C.M.-ALUMINUM CONSTRUCTION MANUAL-published by the Aluminum Association of Florida, Inc. ALLOY-A macroscopically homogeneous mixture of two or more metals for a specific result such as hardness, strength, etc. BIRDCAGE - In aluminum construction a type of screen enclosure consisting of a structural network of aluminum members with screen mesh applied to both walls and roof. Commonly called a pool cage. BONDING - The permanent joining of metallic parts to form an electrically conductive path to a ground. CASTING -A molded piece,of a specific shape, used as a fastening device or as a decorative section. CHAIRRAIL- A horizontal aluminum screen wall component which serves the dual purpose of wall bracing and protection of screen mesh from chair backs. CLEAT - A strip of formed or extruded aluminum used to join aluminum roof panels. This term may also refer to an extruded aluminum section placed between two roof panels to join and strengthen the panels. COLUMN - A vertical structural supporting member. DEFLECTION - The bending ol' a beam or any part of a structure under an applied load. EXTRUDED-A material(such as aluminum)formed into a desired shape by forcing through a shaped opening of a die. FASCIA - The horizontal band which faces off the edge of a roof. FREE STANDING - Refers to an independent structure which does not rely on another structure for any part of its support. GUSSET - A brace, plate, or angle used to connect structural members at a joint. HEADER - A horizontal framing member used to transfer roof and wall loads to bearing columns or support members. HOST STRUCTURE - A structure to which an addition is attached, and which lends support to that addition. KIC KPLATE-A metal plate or strip of other material affixed to the lower portion of a door or a screen wall to prevent damage. Sometimes referred to as a splash panel. MATING SECTIONS - Self Mating Beams (S.M.B.) - Mating posts - A term used to describe two aluminum sections designed to form a structural member when joined together. MESH DENSITY (Screen) - A term used to describe the number of strands in each direction per square inch of screen material. Most common are 18 x 14 and 20 x 20. NEC-NATIONAL ELECTRICALCODE-Published by the National Fire Protection Association. PAN - PANEL - ROOF PANEL - A formed section of aluminum sheet which is intended for the specific purpose of joining with other similar panels to form a roof. The formed shape of the panel is intended to create a structural member with a specific span capability. PITCH (Roof) - The incline or slope of a roof expressed as a ratio of rise to run. POST - A vertical (upright) member which may or may not lend support to the structure. PRIMARY (Members) - Refers to those framing members on which the assembly or structure is dependent for support. PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER (P.E.) - One who is trained and practices in the field of structural engineering and is duly licensed, certified, and registered to do so. PURLIN - Horizontal members used primarily to maintain spacing between roof beams or trusses. SBC- STANDARD BUILDING CODE-A building code published by the Southern Building Code Congress International, Inc. (Latest Edition) SECONDARY(Members)-Refers to framing members which may not lend support to a structure,but are still a part of the assembly. SHEAR or "IN SHEAR" - A term used to indicate a fastening method in which the fasteners are installed perpendicular to the opposing forces which are anticipated. S.M.S. - Sheet Metal Screw. Used to fasten two pieces of metal together. SOFFIT - The underside of a roof overhang and/or the material used to cover that area. SPAN - The distance between structural supports such as walls, columns, girders, etc. SPLICE - A joint where two pieces of material are connected by overlapping, welding, or by a mechanical coupling. SPLINE - A flexible vinyl or hard plastic strip which tits tightly in a groove in an aluminum section for the purpose of attaching screen or another material between such sections. STRUCTURAL- Those members or sections which provide primary integral support to an assembly. SUPER GUTTER - An extruded aluminum section which is of sufficiently heavy thickness and strength to carry off rain water while providing a structural end support for a beam or roof panel. TOLERANCE - An allowable variation from an absolute specification. VINYL ENCLOSURE - A screen enclosure into which vinyl windows have been installed, into the original framework, to resist the entry of rain or dust. VINYL WINDOW- A panel or assembly of panels consistingof a rigid frame, with a translucent non- crystalline thermoplastic material, affixed to that frame in such a manner as to release from the frame in the event of a horizontal windload either inward or outward at a pressure less than the effective composite strength ofthe screen wall with vinvl window frame securely affixed.These panels shall be limited in use to the enclosure of' porches and areas considered to be other than habitable living space. WIN DLOAD -The forces superimposed on a building or structure by the movement of an air mass at a specified velocity. SECTION 2803 - WINDLOAD REQUIREMENTS AND ALLOWABLE STRESSES 2803.1 Aluminum members shall be limited to a deflection of one sixtieth (1/60) of span. 2803.2 Screen walls shall be built to withstand ten (10) pounds per square foot windload inward and outward to the wall. 2803.3 Screen roofs shall be built to withstand seven(7)pounds per square foot windload upward and downward to the roof. 2803.4 Solid walls(including glass)shall be built to withstand twenty-five(25)pounds per square foot windload inward and outward to the wall. 2803.5 Solid aluminum roofs shall be built to withstand twenty (20) pounds per square foot windload downward and thirty (30) pounds per square foot windload (uplift) upward to the roof. 2803.6 All engineering calculations shall comply with these standards or Chapter XII, Minimum Design Loads, STANDARD BUILDING CODE, (Latest Edition), whichever is more stringent. SECTION 2804 - GENERAL CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS 2804.1 The primary members of all Aluminum structures shall have a minimum of forty-four thousandths of an inch (.044") wall thickness. 2804.2 Aluminum work shall be fabricated and anchored so that the assembly will not be distorted nor the fasteners overstressed. 2804.3 Where roof or wall cladding is of aluminum, an approved membrane to protect against water intrusion to the interior shall be provided or the aluminum cladding shall be designed and constructed with an approved continuous edge interlock, overlap or seam to prevent water intrusion. 2804.4 Splices of any aluminum structural member shall be adequately overlapped,gusseted,welded, or shall be spliced directly over a supporting member. 2804.5 The pitch (slope) of all clear span aluminum pan roofs shall be a minimum of one half/twelve(1/z/12) or one half inch (1/2") fall per foot. 2804.6 No structure shall cause a restriction of water flow so as to create a water dam. 2804.7 All hollow extrusions shall be capped to prevent intrusion and collection of water. 2804.8 The size of any screen panel shall not exceed nine feet(9'0")on any one dimension or exceed fifty-six (56) square feet"in total area. SECTION 2805 - SCREEN ENCLOSURES WITH SCREEN ROOFS 2805.1 Span,spacing, and height of all structural members used in construction of screened enclosures depends critically upon the mesh density of screen used. 2805.2 Maximum spans for aluminurn screen roof beams shall be in accordance with the "A.C.M." span tables or may be designed in accordance with this code by a Professional Engineer. 2805.3 Any mating beams shall be fastened together top and bottom, the fasteners shall not be more than forty-two inches(42")apart,or in accordance with manufacturers specifications, whichever is more stringent. 2805.4 Roof purlins shall be placed between beams at a spacing not to exceed seven feet (7'0") on center. Purlins shall be two inch by two inch (2" x 2") hollow shape with two spline grooves. 2805.5 All enclosures steal I be so designed as to require the end ofthe beam that joins that screen wall to connect rigidly to the top ofthe wall upright. The end of the beam shall be joined with gusset plates (minimum fifty thousandths ofan inch(.050")thickness)on both sides ofthe beam orother approved rigid fastening. In the event a beam cannot connect directly to a wall upright,the top of the wall section shall be designed with minimum depth ofthe beam it supports,sarne thickness and width.All beams fastened to the host structure shall be fastened according to details in "A.C.M." or follow good engineering practices. 2805.6 All wall sections except short walls that rest on prepared masonry walls shall have a two inch by two inch (2" x 2") horizontal chairrail between sixteen inches (16") (minimum) and forty eight inches (48") (maximum) in height above the finished floor level. This chairrail shall be properly secured either with internal or external U-channel or exterior angles. The thickness of the U-channel or exterior angles shall be a minimum of forty-four thousandths of an inch(.044"). Two sides of each end of the two inch by two inch (2"x2") horizontal extrusion shall be fastened to prevent twisting. Chairrails fastened on one side only shall not be permitted. Internal screws may be used. 2805.7 The minimum clearance from a deck to the under side of the roof structure shall be seven feet (TO"). A raised roof area shall be installed on any pool with a built-in diving board. Minimum clearance will be ten feet(10'0") above the forward surface(springboard area)of the diving board. Raised roof area shall extend a minimum of twelve feet ( 12'0") in front of the diving board and four feet(4'0")from each side of the center line of the diving board. The minimum clearance above a slide shall be four feet(4'0") from the uppermost surface of the slide (excluding rails) to the underside of the roof structure. 2805.8 Corner cables or rigid diagonal braces shall be used on any wall not directly fastened to the host structure. Such cable or brace shall extend from within four inches (4")of the top of the corner post at an approximate forty-five degree (45°) angle downward along that wall. A. Where cables are used,tension shall be adjusted by the use of turnbuckles or other approved tension adjusting equipment. These shall have a locking device to prevent loosening.This cable assembly shall be at least one thousand seven hundred fifty (1750) pounds test strength. The bottom of the corner cable shall be affixed to the slab with a minimum of three (3) each one quarter inch (1/4") diameter masonry fasteners or two (2) each five sixteenths of an inch (5/16")diameter masonry fasteners through a one eighth inch(1/8")thickness by one inch(I") width aluminum strap or other approved method of fastening. In any case where more than one masonry fastener is used,such fasteners shall be spaced no less than two inches(2")apart.The top of the corner cable shall be affixed according to details in "A.C.M." Note: Any alternate method of fastening shall be designed by a Professional Engineer. B. Where rigid diagonal braces are used, the upper and lower ends of such braces shall be fastened at the junction of a horizontal and a vertical member using a gusset plate or other approved method of fastening. 2805.9 Free standing structures or those having roof support beams with both ends resting on screen walls shall require either diagonal bracing cables, structural bracing columns, or an alternate method of bracing designed by a Professional Engineer. A. Diagonal Bracing Cables Such cables shall extend through or across the roof, with placement and quantity sufficient to achieve a rigid structure. Such cables and their fittings shall be at least one thousand seven hundred fifty ( 1750) pounds test strength. B. Structural Bracing Columns - Such columns shall be of'three inch by three inch by one hundred twenty-five thousandths of an inch (3" x 3" x .125") thickness aluminum (or equivalent strength galvanized steel),set in concrete according to concrete details in"A.C.M." and rigidly strapped and fastened to the uppermost horizontal member of the screen wall. The top of the column shall be capped to prevent water intrusion. 2805.10 All uprights which support beams shall be fastened to the slab by means of ninety-three thousandth of an inch(.093")thickness angles mounted on both sides of the upright,with screws in shear. and with anchor bolts or other approved fasteners into the masonry. (See Detail in "A.C.M."). 2805. 1 1 The screen roof of an enclosure may be constructed in the configuration of a gable,gambrel,or mansard with beams containing splices. These junctions shall be properly gusseted with short beam sections to make a rigid A-frame or other approved method so as not to exert outward thrust on the wall sections. The beam span for roof'configurations other than flat shall be determined by the straight line distance between the two support points of the heam. 2805.12 Where the screen structure is used to enclose a pool,spa,or hot tub,the aluminum contractor shall be responsible to ground (bond) the structure in compliance with NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE (Latest Edition). 2805.13 Every panel of screen shall be fastened securely in place with vinyl spline so that each panel is fastened at all sides, at all purlins and chairrails, independent of the next panel. SECTION 2806 - SCREEN AND/OR ALUMINUM FRAMEWORK UNDER WOOD ROOFS 2806.1 Structural aluminum uprights may be used with or without screen under wood frame roofs known as flat deck,or built-up roofs.This type roof must be supported in accordance with structural charts in "A.C.M." 2806.2 End walls that support no load can be constructed of standard screen wall framing materials. 2806.3 All aluminum posts under wood beams shall require castings or cap plates of same thickness as the post wall and to be the same size as or larger than the perimeter size of post. 2806.4 Any wood beam having a splice shall require the placement of a post at the center line of that splice. SECTION 2807 - SCREEN AND/OR ALUMINUM FRAMEWORK USED WITH ALUMI- NUM ROOFS 2807.1 The primary members of these structures shall be extruded aluminum with a minimum of forty- four thousandths of an inch (.044") wall thickness. 2807.2 Bottom plates of screen walls shall be joined to uprights with internal screws, minimum of two (2) each, one and one half inch by number ten (I'i" x #10) screws each upright section or by another approved method. 2807.3 Bottom plate shall be anchored to floor with thunderbolts or other approved anchors at least every twenty-four inches (24") on center, and one anchor within six inches (6") of each side of each upright. 2807.4 Headers of screen walls shall be joined to uprights with internal screws, minimum of two(2) each one and one half inch by number ten (1'h" x #10) screws each upright section. In the event that internal screws are not used,the post shall be fastened to the header with a sixty-two thousandth of an inch by one inch (.062" x I") aluminum strap from the post to the header with two screws per connection in shear. When screen walls are installed under an existing metal roof and header, the new wall shall be throughbolted or be strapped with two screws per connection in shear. 2807.5 When chairrail or splash panel (kickplate) is used the rail shall be properly secured either with internal or external U-channel or exterior angles. The thickness of the 1-1-channel or exterior angles shall be a minimum of fifty thousandths of an inch(.050"). Not less than two sides of the two inch by two inch (2" x 2") horizontal extrusion shall be fastened at each end to prevent twisting. Internal screws may be used. SECTION 2808 - ALUMINUM ROOFS 2808.1 The span of aluminum roof panels shall not exceed the spans as shown in roof panel charts in "A.C.M." or if panel is not shown then shall be per calculations by a Professional Engineer, according to the thickness. size, and type of panel. 2808.2 Aluminum drive cleats, when used, shall be of equal or greater thickness than the panels used. and shall be fastened to each panel. 2808.3 All aluminum roof panels shall be fastened to all support members(except where rail and pin systems are used) with minimum of three (3) number eight (#8) screws with three-quarter itch (3/4") washers under each screw,or three(3) number ten(#10)self tapping screws with five-eighth inch(5/8") integral washer, per twelve inches (12") width of roof panel. 2808.4 All receivers for aluminum pan roofs fastened to masonry walls shall be fastened with one (1) each quarter inch (1/4") diameter approved masonry fastener at eighteen inches (18") on center, maximum. 2808.5 All receivers for aluminum pan roofs fastened to fascia boards or frame walls shall be fastened with one(I) number ten by one and one half inch(#10 x 1-1/2")screw per twelve inches(12")center to center, maximum. 2808.6 Aluminum roof panel receiver (box header) shall be of equal or greater thickness than the panels used. SECTION 2809 - GLASS ROOM ENCLOSURES 2809.1 Where aluminum posts are used for structural support under a built-up roof,the minimum post size shall be two inch by two inch by ninety three thousandths of an inch(2" x 2" x .093")or two inch by three inch by seventy thousandths of an inch(2" x 3" x .070") not to exceed fifty-four and one half inch (54-1/2") on center or eight feet (8'0") in height. 2809.2 Under new aluminum roofs see "A.C.M." for size and spacing of posts. 2809.3 Under aluminum roof, if existing two inch by two inch(2" x 2") posts are used, they shall be sleeved (both sides) with one inch by two and one-eighth inch by one inch (1" x 2-1/8" x 1") U-channel (minimum forty-five thousandth of an inch(.045")thickness)continuous from header to base plate,or use other approved method of reinforcing existing posts. 2809.4 All doors shall be minimum one and a half inch (1-1/2") thick prime aluminum doors. Door glass shall conform to Chapter XXVII of the STANDARD BUILDING CODE. 2809.5 Sliding glass door enclosures shall conform to Chapter XXVII of the STANDARD BUILDING CODE. 2809.6 Electrical work as required in all glass room enclosures shall comply with requirements of NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE. (Latest Edition). 2809.7 Glass room enclosures built under existing sloping roofs or attached to mobile homes shall have a ceiling height of not less than seven feet (7') in at least one half of the area of the room. SECTION 2810 - VINYL WINDOWS 2810.1 Vinyl windows shall be installed according to manufacturers recommended procedures and shall follow good sound construction and engineering practices. 2810.2 Vinyl enclosed rooms shall not require electrical outlets. 2810.3 Framing for walls to be fitted with vinyl windows shall meet all requirements of'screen wall construction under a given type of roof. SECTION 2811 - FASTENINGS 281 1.1 All fastenings, unless specified differently, shall be spaced a maximum of twenty-four inches (24") on center. 281 1.2 All receivers for aluminum pan roofs fastened to fascia boards or frame walls shall be fastened with one( 1 ) number ten by one and one half inch(#10 x 1-1/2") screw per twelve inches( 12")center to center, maximum. 281 1.3 All fascia boards supporting any aluminum structure shall be fastened to each rafter tail with a minimum of one(I) number ten(#10)screw long enough to penetrate the rafter one and one quarter inch 281 1.4 Post connections shall be: A. Post to castings or one eighth inch ( 1/8") thickness angles with a minimum of two (2) number ten(#10)screws each side or one each( I)one quarter inch(1/4")diameter throughbolt. B. Castings or one eighth inch(1/8")thickness angles to slab with a minimum of two each(2) one quarter inch (1/4") diameter anchors per post. C. Castings or one eighth inch (1/8") thickness angles to wood beam with a minimum of two each (2) one quarter inch by two inch (1/4" x 2") lags screws per post. 281 1.5 All aluminum roof panels shall be fastened to all support members(except where rail and pin systems are used) with a minimum of three (3) number eight(#8) screws with three-quarter inch (3/4") washers under each screw,or three(3) number ten(# 10) self tapping screws with five-eighth inch(5/8") integral washer, per twelve inches (12") width of roof panel. 281 1.6 All receivers for aluminum pan roofs fastened to masonry walls shall be fastened with one(1) each quarter inch (1/4") diameter approved masonry fastener at eighteen inches (18") on center, maximum. 2811.7 Concrete anchors shall beset a minimum of three quarters of an inch(3/4")into the slab.(Deck coatings do not have required holding ability.) Fasteners shall be of sufficient length to go through the coating plus three quarters of an inch (3/4") into the slab. 281 1.8 Any fastener stripped or not holding shall be replaced. 2811.9 Base plate of screen walls shall be joined to uprights with internal screws, minimum of two(2) each one and a half inch number ten (1-1/2" x #10) screws each upright, or other approved method. 281 1.10 Base plate shall be anchored to floor with thunderbolts or other approved anchors at least every twenty-four inches (24") on center, with one anchor within six inches (6") of each side of each column. 281 1.1 1 Headers of screen walls shall be joined to uprights with internal screws, minimum of two(2) each one and a half inch by number ten(1-1/2" x #10) screws at each upright. In the event that internal screws are not used,the post shall be fastened to the header with a one-sixteenth inch by one inch(1/16" x I") aluminum strap from the post to the header with two screws per connection in shear. When screen walls are installed under existing metal roof and header,the new wall shall be throughbolted or be strapped with two screws per connection in shear. 281 1.12 All screw type fasteners shall have it head, integral washer, or be provided with a washer not less than five sixteenths of an inch (5/16") diameter. 281 1.13 All fasteners used on and in conjunction with aluminum work covered in this code shall be painted, stainless steel, galvanized steel, coated or otherwise made to be corrosion resistant. SECTION 2812 - NON-STRUCTURAL DECKING AND SIDING 2812.1 An approved membrane to protect against water intrusion shall be provided when installed over any non-waterproof surface or the aluminum cladding shall be designed and constructed with an approved Continuous edge interlock, overlap or seam to prevent water intrusion. 2812.2 Non-structural decking and siding shall be attached asset forth in S.B.C.,except that aluminum residential siding shall be attached by means of nails or staples ol'sufficient length to penetrate studs live eighths of an inch(5/8") minimum. The fasteners shall be to studs.maximum twenty-four inches(24")on center horizontally and not to exceed twelve inches ( 12") on center vertically. 2812.3 These products shall be installed in accordance with manufacturer's specifications and recommended procedures and other requirements contained in this Code. SECTION 2813 - INSULATION OF ALUMINUM ROOFS 2813.1 When insulation is applied to the top of an aluminum roof, the insulative material shall be covered with a suitable product to resist the elements. Any continuous flat sheathing cover or aluminum skin shall be a minimum of nineteen thousandths (.019") thickness and shall be fastened at least every twelve inches(12")on center around the perimeter and twenty-four inches(24")on center in the field with a minimum of one(1)each number eight(#8)sheet metal screw,with a three quarter inch(3/4")diameter washer. 2813.2 Individual insulation boards shall be affixed or enclosed to accomplish a secure placement on the roof. 2813.3 The installation of insulation or covering shall not be allowed to create"pockets" which may invite nesting of wildlife. SECTION 2814 - UTILITY ROOMS BUILT IN UNDER ALUMINUM ROOFS 2814.1 Walls of these structures shall be designed to withstand the windload requirement of this Code Section 2803.4 (solid walls). 2814.2 Wall top cap channels,when used for roof support,shall be minimum forty-four thousandths of an inch (.044") thickness aluminum. SECTION 2815 - MOBILE HOME ROOF OVERS 2815.1 All materials and fasteners shall be properly installed according to this code. 2815.2 Any contractor installing beam and roof cover system not covered by Charts and Tables contained in "A.C.M." shall provide engineering for the system used. 2815.3 Roof materials used for roof overs shall be fastened to the sub-structure on the perimeter and center supports every four inches (4") with a minimum of one (1) each number eight(#8) sheet metal screw with a three quarter inch (3/4") washer or a number ten (#10) screw with integral`washer. 2815.4 All plumbing and mechanical vents shall be extended through the new roof and properly flashed to provide adequate drainage. 2815.5 All gable type roofs with more than four inches (4") dead air space shall be vented. SECTION 2816 - DISSIMILAR MATERIALS 2816.1 Aluminum may contact compatible metals such as, but not limited to: A. Non-magnetic stainless steel. B. Zinc. (Galvanized Steel) C. White bronze. 2816.2 Aluminum contacting metals not considered compatible shall be protected as follows: A. Painting the non-compatible metal with a prime coat of zinc chromate primer or other suitable primer, followed by two coats of paint or other suitable protective coating, excluding those containing lead pigmentation. B. Painting the non-compatible metal with a coating of a heavy bodied bituminous paint. C. Placing a good quality caulking material between the aluminum and the non-compatible metal. D. Applying a non-absorptive tape or gasket. E. Hot dip galvanizing or zinc plating steel members before fabrication. 28 16.3 Aluminum surfaces of load bearing members set in concrete,or other masonry materials,shall be protected with alkali resistant coatings, such as heavy bodied bituminous paint. SECTION 2817 - FOUNDATIONS AND GROUND SLABS FOR ALUMINUM STRUC- TURES 2817.1 The thickness of concrete floor slabs poured directly on the ground shall not be less than three and a half inches (3-1/2"). An approved vapor barrier shall be installed underneath the slab.
