MEMORANDUM
TO: The Honorable Mayor
and Members of the Commission
FROM: Jim Hans
anager
SUBJECT: City Mana er's Report
Police Officers per Capita; A City Commissioner recently asked for a comparison of the number of
police officers per capita with other local jurisdictions. Chief Classey put one together, using not only
other local jurisdictions but also statewide and national totals. It shows Atlantic Beach to have one of the
lowest per capita numbers of officers at 2.1 officers per thousand population which compares favorably
with an average per capita account for other Florida cities of 2.47, with a total count for the State of
Florida at 3.85 officers per thousand and a national count (from 2004) showing an average of 3.49
officers per thousand. Keep in mind that Atlantic Beach also has one of the lowest crime rates around. A
copy of Chief Classey's comparison is attached.
