MINUTES OF THE MEETING OP THE ATLANTIC BEACH CITY COMMISSION HELD AT THE CITY HALL ON MONDAY, MARCH 9TH, 1959 AT 8 P.M. Present: Wm. S. Howell Preben Johansen Chas . R. Moore Hugh Roberts W. Laney Whitehurst, Commissioners and Frank Thompson, City Attorney J.P. Waggoner, • Jr. , City Manager Adele S. Grage , City Clerk The meeting was Called to order by the Mayor- Commissioner, Mr. Howell . Minutes of the meeting of February 23rd, 1959 were approved as -written upon motion of Mr. Johansen, sec- onded by Mr. Moore . A letter was read from the Gaillardia Garden Circle commending the Commission for its interest in beauti- fication and sanitary measures benefitting the City. A letter was read from the Beaches Civil Defense Coun- cil announceing a meeting at the Community Center on Thursday, March 12th, 1959 at 8 P.M. with Mr. W.A. Weatherford, Director of Civil Defense for Duval County as the speaker. A letter was read from the East Duval County Mosquito Control District asking for any suggestions for pro- posed projects which we might need for removal of mos- quito breeding conditions . There were none suggested at this time . A letter was presented from the U.S. Army Engineers announcing a meeting at the Jacksonville Beach Communi- ty Center on April 7th, 1959 at 10 A.M. to consider the need of protective measures to prevent hurricane tides from-flooding highly developed areas along the East Coast. Mr. Waggoner announced that the Federal Government has made its final engineering inspection and audit and•we are supposed to receive a total grant of '467,081.85 , of which '..43,300.00 has already been received. Mr. Waggoner advised that the first pipe for the sewer lines arrived to-day and the work on the gravity sewer lines would start in a few days . Minutes of 3-9-59, Page 2 Mr. Waggoner advised that the City Manager' s Short Course is being held at Fort Lauderdale on April l?th to 22nd and he would like to attend. Following discussion Dr. Whitehurst moved that the City Manager go to the Short Course with expenses paid, seconded by Mr. Moore and carried. A letter was presented from the Florida League of Municipal- ities advising of the bills that are being prepared for con- sideration at this session of the Legislature. Acting Fire Chief Howell presented the monthly reports of the Fire Department for January and February, 1959. The reports were received and filed.
