Adjournment ,`°, ,, R, MINUTES OF BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE October 9, 2000 A regular meeting of the Beautification Committee was held Monday, October 9, 2000, in the City Ha11 Conference Room. Present were Mimi Ames, Barbara Bonner, Gloria Vaughn, Jane Vincent, Staff Member Susan Dunham and City Gardener Terry Putnam. 1. Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 7:35 p.m. 2. Recognition of Visitors Committee members, staffmembers and visitors Dee Carter and Paula O'Bannon introduced themselves. Jody Richards introduced herself as the original Beautification Committee Chairman and offered her assistance to the Beautification Committee. 3. Approval of Minutes A motion was made by Committee Member Vaughn, seconded by Committee Member Vincent and unanimously carried to approve the Minutes of September 13, 2000, as submitted. 4. Old Business A. Appointment of Officials: Jody Richards volunteered herself as Chairperson. A motion was made by Committee Member Vincent, seconded by Committee Member Bonner and ,°'°. unanimously carried to elect Jody Richards as Chairperson for the Beautification Committee. No one stepped forward for the Vice Chair position. The Committee brought Jody Richards up-to-date on the status of existing projects. Dee Carter stated that she would like to become a Beautification Committee member. Paula O'Bannon stated that she would prefer to remain a visitor at this point in time. B. Update on Landscaped Areas: Gardener Terry Putnam stated that she has been maintaining current plantings. In addition, she has accomplished the following: • Planted Aztec grass to replace what has died at Atlantic and Seminole. • Ahern Street: Re-mulched and pruned. • 5aturiba Drive: Re-staked, re-mulched and fertilized the Bradford Pears. They are not doing well due to the drought, salt and wind damage. • Taken soil samples from most of the beds for testing and sent to the Extension Service. • Inherited a new bed in front of Sunnyland Cleaners and planted Purple Queen. • Bus Stops: We can put our own recycled benches at the bus stops and Terry Putnam would like to address this issue at a later date. Gardener Terry Putnam advised that the flower beds she maintains are as follows: Atlantic/ Seminole Road, five-way stop, trees on Plaza. on south side, Sailfish Drive, lifeguard station, Eighth Street beach access, Saturiba Drive, median at Aquatic Gardens, Tenth Street beach access, Ahern Street, `Welcome To Atlantic Beach" on Mayport Road, bed in front of Sunnyland Cleaners . ~ Beautification Committee Meeting October 9, 2000 Page 2 ~~'"~~ C. 19~~' Street Beach Access Update: Susan Dunham advised that the 19~' Street Beach Access group received Commission approval. D. Tree Giveaway: Susan Dunham informed the Committee that letters were sent to the Tree Giveaway participants on October 2, 2000. A master list of participants with addresses and choice of trees was provided to Hickory Creek. E. Public Beach Access Program: Deferred until the next Beautification Committee meeting to allow Committee members time to review the program. F. Sailfish Drive: Gardener Terry Putnam advised that Public Works has agreed to help remove the dead Pindo palms. In addition, the owners of the Breakfast Nook have agreed to purchase railroad ties to line their driveway. Guy Preston, the real estate agent who is handling the sale of the Pic and Save building, confirmed with Terry Putnam that there is no one currently interested in purchasing the property. Discussion was held regarding what type of plant material to put at this location. Chairperson Richards requested that we defer this item so that more time can be given to this very large area, the future of the building and the future of the area. A motion was made by Committee Member Vincent, seconded by Committee Member Ames, to defer this item until the next Beautification Committee meeting. The motion passed with Mimi Ames, Dee Carter, Jody Richards, Gloria Vaughn and Jane Vincent voting in favor of the motion. Barbara Bonner abstained from voting. 5. New Business A. Luminaria: Gardener Terry Putnam advised that the deadline for ordering luminaria is this Monday, October 16, 2000. A suggestion was made to sell lutninaria at the Selva Marina, Festival. A discussion was held regarding what night to light the luminaria~ A motion was made by Committee Member Carter, seconded by Committee Member Vincent and unanimously carried to order 500 luminaria kits. 6.
