Beautification Committee
Minutes for April 14, 1999
The Beautification Committee met Wednesday, April 14, 1999. Committee members present were June
Morns, Chairperson, Mimi Ames, Steve Geuther, Barbara Hopson, Jane Vincent and Timmy Johnson for
Ron Schiebler, City Gardener.
The meeting was called to order by the Chairperson at 7:43 p.m.
June Morris stated that the facts in the Minutes of February 9, 1999 were correct but suggested one change
to the first paragraph as follows: "Motion was made to approve...". Jane Vincent motioned to approve the
minutes with the change, Steve Geuther seconded.
Old Business
Plant Swap
The plant swap date was changed to Sunday, April 18, 1999, due to conflicts. The committee members
agreed to help at the Swap Meet as follows: Jane Vincent 10-12; Ron Schiebler 9-3; June Morris 9-3 or
10-3; Mimi Ames 1-3; Barbara Hopson 12-2. Steve Geuther is unable to attend due to a previous
commitment.
Per June Morns, Ron Schiebler has all the signs ready. Notices for the Swap Meet were in the Apri17
Beaches Leader and the April 14 Calendar section of Shorelines. June Morris clarified that all donations
for plants would go to Beautification Committee projects. A table would be set up for the sale of Atlantic
~`"°~'""'~ Beach license plates. Timmy Johnson will ask Ron to bring a donation bucket and change.
Arbor Da~Program
Ron and June met with Greenscape about the Arbor Day program. Greenscape is very enthusiastic.
Greenscape stated that it takes a lot of money and a lot of people (volunteers). Greenscape suggested that
the committee get a corporate sponsor to provide the up-front monies needed for security, supplies and a
tent. June stated that Ron thought the committee might be able to use the city tent. The location
suggested for the program was the vacant lot between the theatre and ABC Jax Liquor off Atlantic
Boulevard. Ron is to locate the owner and find out about its availability.
A commitment has to be made to Greenscape soon because the trees have to be ordered one year in
advance. The Atlantic Beach tree sale needs to be in the spring (March) so as not to compete with the
Jacksonville tree sale in January.. Volunteers are needed and suggestions were made for the Boy Scouts,
Parrot Heads, Fletcher High School and the Atlantic Beach Police Explorers.
A project manager is needed full time for the week of the sale to direct labor, fencing and planning
sessions. Steve Geuther volunteered to help in the evenings. Barbara Hopson indicated that she might be
able to help but is not able to commit at this point in time. Steve suggested a joint project manager.
Sponsors suggested were Sea Turtle Inn, Rag Time, Aqua East, Al's Pizza and Monahan's. It was
decided that Neptune Beach would not be asked to participate so that we could start out on a smaller scale.
The committee decided to first find the location, then find the corporate sponsor. Barbara Hopson
motioned to commit to going forward with the Greenscape project in March 2000 to sell trees to Beaches
residents. It was seconded by Jane Vincent. Everyone was in favor.
