07-12-95 BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE
Minutes of Meeting of July 12 , 1995
The regular meeting was held on Wednesday , July 12 , in the
Conference Room. Present were: Jack Robbins, Chairman,
Brenda Wray , June Morris, Ottilie Wilkins , Rick Bell , Carl
Walker , Coordinator , and Ron Schiebler, City Gardener.
The meeting was called to order at 7 : 35 pm and a motion made
by June Morris to accept the minutes of the last meeting, as
written. Brenda Wray seconded and the motion passed.
June Morris was agreeable to serving as Vice-Chairman for the
Committee and was unanimously chosen to fill that office. She
10 and Jack Ms will serve in their respective offices until
Pry the next annual election in June of 1996 .
Ron Schiebler reported on the status of the landscaped areas
which are Committee undertakings . He advised that the sign
locations are all being maintained, as well as Ahern Street.
The improvements at the landscaped "mailbox area" at the in-
tersection of Seminole Road and Plaza are progressing and Ron
hopes to have that project complete during the week of July
17 . The landscaping at the sign at Atlantic Boulevard has
been repaired following damage by a recent vehicular accident
and replacement plants have been installed at several loca-
tions . Ron also passed around some recent photographs of
Committee maintained areas.
Brenda Wray reported on the progress of her efforts on the
"adoption" of the medians of Atlantic Blvd. She had gotten
commitments on four (4) medians . Winn Dixie has already con-
tributed $200 . 00 toward a median; Publix has agreed to donate
$1 , 000 ; Watson Realty & McCall Fuel will share a median at
$500 each and Scotty' s will donate the plants and planting
material to landscape another. Brenda received a round of
applause for her efforts .
The next topic discussed was the tree and/or shrub plantings
at the locations previously discussed by the Committee. Carl
reported that a check had been issued for $2000 towards the
Selva Marina Drive beautification efforts. After discussion,
the group agreed that oleanders should be planted on both
sides of Sandpiper, north of Plaza. They should all be one
color and spaced approximately 15 ' apart.
It was also agreed that the sub-committee should meet on-site
to determine the best planting areas and tree species for
both Royal Palm and Sailfish. After considerable discussion,
"' the members felt that oleanders would also. be the best choice
for Church Road since they would block the view of the 4 foot
fence on the adjacent property better than installing hard-
wood trees at that location.
Carl reported that he submitted the department budget on
06/30/95, as required. He also distributed a copy of the
proposed schedule for budget meetings and advised that he
would keep the committee members informed as to when the
City Commission would be reviewing the beautification bud-
get. Jack again urged members to attend the public meetings
and be supportive of budget proposals.
Jack went over the accomplishments made by the Committee for
this year. Carl will accumulate a listing so that it will be
available for the forthcoming budget review with the City
Commission, as well as the photo album which Ron has been
keeping of landscaped areas.
Carl advised that he continues to get responses to the sur-
vey in the last issue of "Tideviews" for City tree, etc. He
is compiling them and will include the results in a future
issue of "Tideviews". Jack suggested that a proclamation be
made to the City Commission so that the choices will be offi-
cially adopted by the City.
There was no further business and the meeting was adjourned
at 8:56 PM.
