04-11-90BEAiITIFICATION COMt~IITTEE The Atlantic Beach Beautification Committee met on Wednesday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall. Present were Jody Ford, Dezmond Waters, Barbara Bonner, Betty Carey, Alice Pardee, Dorothy Hollis, Nancy Sheehy, Carl Walker, Joanna Fletcher, Lyman Fletcher, Carolyn Woods, Sandy Sheppard and Georgia Horn. The meeting was opened by discussing the proposed beach access plans and the subject was mentioned whether or not a permit would be necessary before the work starts. Dezmond Waters said that no permit would be needed in order to start the 19th street work but due to the parking involved, one would be necessary before the work on 18th was started. Jody advised members to be prepared for some problems that may occur due to the fact that the State frowns upon creating less parking spaces at public accesses. She reccommended that the beach front be done first, then the parking areas. Also mentioned was the Coastal Clean-Up that will be taking place September 28, 1990 and whether or not the committee wanted to participate. She asked for thoughts on the subject and said that she felt that the Boy Scouts were already participating. The Adopt A Highway program that the D.O.T. has was talked about brief ly and Chairman Ford asked if the committee would be interested in that program. It was decided that the committee would wait until more information was received from D.O.T. before any decision was made. Carolyn Woods brought up the subject of off street parking and the problems associated with it.She said that the city should address it and that a general policy should be made and the city should adopt it. Also an ordinance to protect the community's appearance was discussed and what the committee should do to address it along with trying to get business's involved in a program where there would be a Business Beautifiul Award """ presented. ~. Jody briefly talked about the materials that would be researched in reference to the project and reminded members to look for plants that required low maintenance, very low watering and to give the high end and low end on materials so that they would have something to choose from. Also mentioned was concrete and the different types there were. Jody asked members to look at different types and to also bring in examples of materials. The remaining members who were not working on the Tree Ordinance split into two groups which were: Joanna Fletcher Dorothy Hollis - Lighting Nancy Sheehy Betty Carey Barbara Bonner - Landscaping Alice Pardee At this time Lyman Fletcher and the others remained to work on the Tree Ordinance. He said that they needed to discuss changes so that they could discuss the Ordinance with the other committee members before it was presented to the Commission for final approval. A special meeting was set for April 25, @ 7:30 p.m. With no further discussion, the meeting was adjourned at 9:30 p.m.
