04-11-90BEAiITIFICATION COMt~IITTEE
The Atlantic Beach Beautification Committee met on Wednesday, April 11,
at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall. Present were Jody Ford, Dezmond Waters,
Barbara Bonner, Betty Carey, Alice Pardee, Dorothy Hollis, Nancy Sheehy,
Carl Walker, Joanna Fletcher, Lyman Fletcher, Carolyn Woods, Sandy
Sheppard and Georgia Horn.
The meeting was opened by discussing the proposed beach access plans and
the subject was mentioned whether or not a permit would be necessary
before the work starts. Dezmond Waters said that no permit would be
needed in order to start the 19th street work but due to the parking
involved, one would be necessary before the work on 18th was started.
Jody advised members to be prepared for some problems that may occur due
to the fact that the State frowns upon creating less parking spaces at
public accesses. She reccommended that the beach front be done first,
then the parking areas.
Also mentioned was the Coastal Clean-Up that will be taking place
September 28, 1990 and whether or not the committee wanted to participate.
She asked for thoughts on the subject and said that she felt that the Boy
Scouts were already participating. The Adopt A Highway program that the
D.O.T. has was talked about brief ly and Chairman Ford asked if the
committee would be interested in that program. It was decided that the
committee would wait until more information was received from D.O.T.
before any decision was made.
Carolyn Woods brought up the subject of off street parking and the
problems associated with it.She said that the city should address it and
that a general policy should be made and the city should adopt it. Also
an ordinance to protect the community's appearance was discussed and what
the committee should do to address it along with trying to get business's
involved in a program where there would be a Business Beautifiul Award
""" presented.

Jody briefly talked about the materials that would be researched in
reference to the project and reminded members to look for plants that
required low maintenance, very low watering and to give the high end and
low end on materials so that they would have something to choose from.
Also mentioned was concrete and the different types there were. Jody
asked members to look at different types and to also bring in examples of
materials. The remaining members who were not working on the Tree
Ordinance split into two groups which were:
Joanna Fletcher
Dorothy Hollis - Lighting
Nancy Sheehy
Betty Carey
Barbara Bonner - Landscaping
Alice Pardee
At this time Lyman Fletcher and the others remained to work on the Tree
Ordinance. He said that they needed to discuss changes so that they could
discuss the Ordinance with the other committee members before it was
presented to the Commission for final approval. A special meeting was set
for April 25, @ 7:30 p.m.
With no further discussion, the meeting was adjourned at 9:30 p.m.
