MINUTES OF
BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MEETING
September 12, 2001
A regular meeting of the Beautification Committee was held Wednesday, September 12, 2001, in
the City Hall Conference Room. Present were Chairperson Jody Richards, Mimi Ames, Gloria
Vaughn, Jane Vincent and Susan Dunham.
1. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 7:50 p.m.
2. Recognition of Visitors
None.
3. Approval of Minutes of June 13, 2001, and August 1 2001
A motion was made by Committee Member Vincent, seconded by Committee Member
Ames and unanimously carried to approve the Minutes of June 13, 2001, and August 1,
2001.
4. Old Business
A. Update on Landscaped Areas: Timmy Johnson was unable to attend the meeting.
Chairperson Richards stated that-the gardener, Julie Bremer, is doing a good job. She stated that
the gardens at the five-way stop, Atlantic Boulevaid/Seminole Road and the plantings along
Sailfish Drive look good.
B. Committee Membership: Chairperson Richards stated that she has approached a number of
people with regard to joining the Beautification Committee and the general response has been that
there is no need for further beautification in Atlantic Beach. Committee Member Vincent stated
that she has also invited a few people to join but has not had any serious replies. Chairperson
Richards stated that when the Beautification Committee was originally started, there was a need
for the committee; the committee did the planting, the signs, etc. She stated that over the years
the City has hired personnel to do this work. She further stated that she is not trying to dissolve
the Committee but she wants to make sure that the committee is working for a reason.
Committee Member Vincent suggested the idea of forming a garden club. Chairperson Richards
stated that this was an excellent idea and a good way to follow through on the monthly public
information seminars. Committee Member Vaughn cautioned against redundancy with regard to
the work the City is currently doing. It was determined that Chairperson Richards would write a
memo to all committee members requesting attendance at the October member to determine
consensus for whether or not to dissolve the Beautification Committee. She stated that if the
committee decides to continue, guidelines have to be approved; if it is decided to dissolve the
committee, the commission needs to be approached. Discussion was held with regard to how to
forma garden club.
C. Beautification Committee Guidelines: This agenda item was tabled until the next
Beautification Committee meeting
D. New Areas to Beautify:
• Sailfish Drive: Committee Member Vincent will report on the status of additional
~"~"`` plantings on Sailfish Drive at the next Beautification Committee meeting.

• Medians on Plaza: Chairperson Richards and Committee Member Vincent stated that
they thought this median looked fine and did not need any additional beautification.
• Medians on Selva Marina Drive: Committee Member Vincent stated that some
homeowners have improved the median in front of their homes and others want the areas
in front of their homes improved. Discussion was held with regard to the possibility of
planting azaleas in the median from Seminole Road to Saturiba Drive. Chairperson
Richards requested that this topic be placed on next month's agenda.
• Seminole Road in front of new townhomes: Committee Member Vincent suggested
beautifying the right-of--way in front of the new townhomes along Seminole Road.
E. Public Information Seminars: Chairperson Richards stated that if the committee is
dissolved, the group, in conjunction with a garden club, could hold the public information
seminars. She stated that they could create a 12-month calendar that would he great for the
community.
Committee Member Vaughn arrived at 8:30 p.m.
Committee Member Vaughn advised that has not heard back Florida Yards and Neighbors
The committee determined that they would table the public information seminars until the
committee has decided whether to dissolve or not.
`` A motion was made by Committee Member Vaughn, seconded by Committee Member
Ames and unanimously carried to table the monthly public information seminars until-the
committee resolves the primary issue of the status of the Beautification Committee.
5. New Business
A. Tree Giveaway: This agenda item was tabled until the next Beautification Committee
meeting.
6. Announcements/Reports
The next Beautification Committee meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 10, 2001, at .
8:00 p.m.
Chairperson .Richards commended Committee Member Vincent for the work that she has done at
the Eleventh Street. beach access.

The meeting was adjourned at 9:05 p.m.
