02-14-96BEAUTIFICATION COMMIT`T`EE MINUTES
Meeting of February 14, 1996
The regular meeting of the Committee was held on Wednesday,
February 14, 1996, in the Conference Room of City Hall.
Present were: June Morris, Vice-Chairman, Barbara Hopson,
Allison Johnson, Barbaz•a Bonner, and Ron Schiebler, City
Gardener. Also attending was guest, Olive Bruggeman.
The meetij~g was called to order by June Morris at 7:30 PM,
in the absence of Jack Robbins. Barbara Bonner moved to ap-
prove the minutes of the last meeting, as written. Barbara
Hopson seconded and the motion passed.
June Morris reported on the Arbor Dav Tree Sale, advising
that tYiere was a good turn out, although the nurseries closed
up early due to the poor weather conditions {cold, windy and
overcast?. The programs Yield at A.B. Elementary were very
beneficial, concluding with the planting of the two donated
oak trees by Ron Schiebler. Barbara Hopson coordinated the
programs. The two trees have been adopted by lst and 5th
grade students. Ron was thanked for his efforts by a poster
and stories wrifi, ten by the students on the subject of trees.
Beautification of street end beach accesses was discussed.
The articles in the local papers brought about interested re-
sponses from 3rd, 4th, and 15th street. Concern was expressed
about maintenance of the areas once they improved. Ron ad-
vised that Boy Scout groups could help with the clean-up if
needed and notified in advance. It was stressed that City
administration is very interested in this project. Other sug-
gestions were made and it was agreed to wait until the March
meeting to make more definite plans based on responses from
interested groups. June brought out that before beautifi-
cation efforts are made, the parking must be addressed and in
place.
Carl has already obtained costs from public works on instal-
lation of water at each access. Olive recommended that native
plant material was a "must" for easy maintenance. As a mem-
ber of the Florida Native Plant Society, she has knowledge of
native plants.
There was considerable discussion on the proposed grant for
plantings of the Atlantic Blvd. medians which was passed, by
resolution, at the recent Commission meeting. The Committee
` wants to stress. that native plants be used and that the group
strongly opposes the irrigation system planned and the use of
"imported" palm trees and other plants. This item is to be
fux•ther discussed at the next meeting.
A chairperson is still needed for the Spring Bright Spots
tour. Robin Soergel can help, but not chair. Also, Brenda
Wray has volunteered to help. It was discussed that tour
should be postponed until April or May due to the hard winter
we have had. Further discussion or this will be deferred to
the next regular meeting. The same is true of the Earth Dav
celebration. It was expressed that the two events should be
combined; members were asked to come up with ideas for earth
day and bring them to the next meeting.
Ron reported on landscaping efforts since the last meeting
including work done on the Atlantic Blvd. medians, and all
other landscaped areas, including what had transpired at the
former sign location at Fleet Landing.
Discussion on the forthcoming annual election of committee
officers in Aprii was postponed until the next meeting.
There was no further business and the meeting was adjourned
by June Morris at 8:40 PM.
