06-12-96 BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MINUTES Meeting of June 12, 1996 The regular meeting of the Committee was held on Wednesday, June 12, 1996, in the Conference Room of City Hall. Present were: Jack Robbins, Chairperson, Barbara Hopson, Brenda Wray, Barbara Bonner, Chuck Pendleton, Gloria Vaughn, Mimi Ames, Ron Schiebler, City Gardener, and Carl Walker, Coordinator. Also Present were guests Ben Dinkins, Donna Casey, and Jan Howell. The meeting was called to order by Jack Robbins at 7:40 PM, and the guests were introduced. Ben Dinkins, guest speaker, presented a program on native plants and landscaping. He distributed copies of excerpts from publications which listed native plants/trees/shrubs and also passed around photos of Cumberland Island and of an award winning office using native plant landscaping. This was followed by a 15 minute slide presentation of many types of native plants. During the slide showing, Mr, Din- '` kins answered questions from the members, and identified the plants or trees shown. Following the program, Mr. Dinkins was thanked for his participation and time. Jack Robbins advised that, in checking with Public Works, he had found that considerable work was planned at the site previously discussed by the Committee (intersection of East Coast Drive and Seminole Roadl for planting of native plants. The work is in connection with the storm water drainage pro- ject soon to be undertaken by the City. He recommended that any plans for landscaping at that location be delayed for at least one year. There was a brief discussion regarding the proposed grant by Greenscape for the Atlantic Blvd. medians. No word has been received yet as to if the grant has been awarded. Jack men- tioned that he understood that, if the grant is awarded, the type of plants/palms can be altered from the proposed plan. Barbara Hopson reported on the success of the "Spring Bright Spots" tour held June 1 & 2. Over 125 maps had been picked up from City Hall and feed back on the event had been very complimentary. The press gave considerable coverage to the event. Jack suggested that a similar "Fall Bright Spots" tour be held in October. He also, for the Committee, thanked Barbara and the other sub-Committee members for their efforts and work to make the event successful. Carl reported that the purchase orders for the tree planting were issued and work would begin shortly.. Ron updated the group on progress at the sign locations, including the pro- posed relocation of the sign previously at Fleet Landing. He also outlined the recent work accomplished on the Atlantic Blvd. landscaped medians. Carl reported on the progress of the beach access/street end improvement "share-cost" program. Barbara Bonner was asked to follow up on the contacts she had on 11th Street so that progress can be made at that location. It was decided to defer discussion on the action plan until the next meeting due to the lateness of the hour. Jack brought up for discussion the possibility of cancelling the July meeting due to peak vacation time. Several members advised that they would not be able to attend the July meet- ing. By consensus, it was agreed that the committee would not meet in July and that the next regular meeting date would be in August. There was no further business and the meeting was adjourned at 9:20 PM. Carl Walker Beautification Coordinator
