MINIITES
The Atlantic Beach Beautification Committee met on March 14, 1990 at 7:30
p.m. at Atlantic Beach City Hall. In attendance were Mayor Gulliford,
Jody Ford, Dezmond Waters, Carl Walker, Bob Wilkins, Nancy Sheehy,
Barbara Bonner, Carolyn Woods, Bonnie Booth, Dorothy Hollis and Georgia
Horn.
Carl Walker opened the meeting by discussing the new signs for Atlantic
Beach and reported the job has been awarded to Ace Signs. Carolyn Woods
agreed to help in the landscaping of the area of the signs and asked if
Public Works could possibly help out in the maintenance of the area.
Suggestions were made such as what type flowers to use around the signs,
checking for height of signs, and if the signs could be moved to a
different area than where they are now away from the pull off lane.
Dezmond Waters suggested putting a barrier of some type around the signs
^„ to protect them from cars and Jody Ford said she felt that railroad ties
would also make nice beds for planting.
The committee then discussed the area at Ocean Blvd. & Atlantic Blvd. in
reference to improving it especially around the Sea Turtle. Everyone
agreed that the biggest problem is the cars that par's. along Ocean Blvd.
Mayor Gulliford said that the committee needed to concentrate on the
right of ways that are grassy. He said that trees needed to be planted to
prevent parking, as other residents have further down Ocean Blvd. Mayor
Gulliford also asked that the committee get a plan together and fora
couple of volunteers to go to the Sea Turtle and ask for their help to
beautify the area. He said that he felt they would surely agree to help.
Chairman Ford said since Lyman Fletcher was not present at the meeting
that the Tree Ordinance would be discussed at the next meeting and would
continue on the changes. Briefly mentioned was permits and who would need
one for removing trees. Committee decided that if one person needed a
permit, that everyone should. Also along the lines of the Tree Ordinance
discussion, the fines that would be collected from the violators was
mentioned and Mayor Gulliford said that it would be possible to set up a
fund with those fines established for the Beautification Committee.
The Yard of the Month was briefly talked about and this months recipient
was mentioned. Carl Walker also mentioned that the Beaches Leader was no
longer able to provide an article and picture due to some problems they
had been experiencing. Mayor Gulliford asked Georgia Horn to check into
seeing if the Times-Union Beaches Section or The Sun Times could provide
an article each month.
The Beaches Access projects were talked about and Mayor Gulliford said
that the committee needed to start at the 19th Street access and work
it's was South on to the other accesses. Other accesses were talked about
including 7th, 15th, 18th & 19th.
Chairman Ford set the next meeting date for April 3rd, at 7:30 p.m. at
City Hall and with no further discussion, the meeting was adjourned at
9:00 p.m.
