MINUTES OF
BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE
June 6, 2000
A regular meeting of the Beautification Committee was held Wednesday, June 6, 2000, in the City Hall
Conference Room. Present were June Morris, Chairperson, Barbara Bonner, Steve Geuther, Jane Vincent and
Staff Member Susan Dunham.
I. Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by Chairperson June Morris, at 7:35 p.m.
II. Approval of Minutes
The Minutes of the Meeting of May 10, 2000, were amended as follows: Agenda Item IV. New
Business, 2000/2001 Budget: Change "beautify the north side of Sailfish Drive..." to "beautify the
west side of Sailfish Drive..." Steve Geuther moved to approve the Minutes of May 10, 2000, as
amended; Barbara Bonner seconded and the motion carved.
III. Old Business
A. Update on Landscaped Areas: Susan Dunham advised that last Wednesday was Terry Putnam's
first day of work as the City Gardener. Terry Putnam is fixing the sprinkler system at the garden
at Seminole and Atlantic and has removed the dead snapdragons. In addition, James Loper has
not delivered the rest of the plants ordered for the garden area plantings. Susan Dunham will
follow up with him on the flower delivery.
B. Landscaping of Lifeguard Station: Susan Dunham informed the Committee that the landscaping
for the lifeguard station is anticipated to be completed within two weeks.
C. Atlantic Beach Elementary School Art Festival: Susan Dunham stated that the elementary
students at Atlantic Beach Elementary really enjoyed receiving the Shumard Oak seedlings.
Camille Hunter, Master Gardener, gave a demonstration on how to plant the seedlings. After
discussion, Steve Geuther moved that we request $500 in the 2000/2001 budget for purchase of
seedlings for the next Atlantic Beach Elementary Art Festival. Jane Vincent seconded the motion
which passed unanimously.
D. Tree Giveaway: June Morris advised that there are approximately 500 homes in Royal Pahns.
June Morris also mentioned that Hickory Creek Nursery is able to provide seven gallon Live Oaks
and Sycamores that are four to five feet tall for approximately $25.00 each. This would allow us
to purchase approximately 80 trees. Barbara Bonner stated that there are 130 homes in Aquatic
Gardens. Discussion was held regarding delivery of the trees to the individuals. Options were
discussed but no decision was made. Susan Dunham displayed the artist's proof of the
doorhanger, the application form and the planting instructions for the Committee's approval.
Susan Dunham will have the doorhangers printed and then will give them to the meter readers for
delivery.
E. Sailfish Drive: Barbara Bonner advised the Committee that the pindo pans were not in good
condition and suggested planting oak trees in their place. The Committee agreed that the pindo
palms were in bad condition and that there was no point in replacing them with new pindo palms.
Discussion was held on how blighted the whole area looks and that this is a major feeder. road into
the City of Atlantic Beach. The Committee asked Susan Dunham to find out the procedures to
follow in requesting property owners to clean up their property, in particular, the Breakfast Nook,
~~' the Pic and Save parking lot and the lot on the northeast corner of Atlantic Boulevard and Sailfish
Drive.

to be renamed the "Beach Access Beautification Program."
