Adjournment ""` MINUTES OF BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE April 12, 2000 A regular meeting of the Beautification Committee was held Wednesday, April 12, in the City Hall Conference Room. Present were June Morris, Chairperson, Barbara Bonner, Gloria Vaughn, Jane Vincent and Staff Member Susan Dunham. I. Call to Order The meeting was called to order by Chairperson June Morns, at 7:30 p.m. II. Approval of Minutes Gloria Vaughn moved to approve the Minutes of March 8, 2000, as submitted; Barbara Bonner seconded and the motion carried. III. Old Business A. Arbor Day Tree Sale: June Morris informed the Committee that everyone worked very hard at the tree sale and felt that the sale was a success in spite of the lack of timely advertising. B. Update on Landscaped Areas: Susan Dunham advised that E&W Nursery completed one round of maintenance on 12 garden areas. The next service will include fertilizing and mulching in addition to edging, weeding, mowing and removal of litter and dead vegetation. The Committee requested that E&W use small pine bark mulch instead of cypress mulch. C. Landscaping of Lifeguard Station: Susan Dunham stated that the Director of Parks and Recreation, Timmy Johnson, has taken over the responsibility of landscaping the lifeguard station. Susan Dunham will assist Mr. Johnson in this process. In addition, the City will not be contracting out the maintenance for the garden areas but will instead re-advertise the gardener position. This position will report to Timmy Johnson. The Committee members expressed their concern regarding their lack of input on what is planted in the garden areas. D. Sailfish Drive: Barbara Bonner suggested planting trees between the palms to create a tree canopy. After discussion, the Committee suggested addressing this location at the June meeting. E. Tree Giveaway: Susan Dunham distributed the amendment to the Tree Ordinance allowing the use of Tree Fund money for the tree giveaway. After discussion, the Committee decided begin planning the Tree Giveaway at the May meeting. IV. New Business A. Mayor's Neighborhood Matching Grant Program: Susan Dunham asked the Committee members if they had. given any thought to whether or not they wanted to apply for this grant and if they had a project in mind. B. 19~' Street Beach Access: The 19~' Street Beach Access group called and stated they were not ready to bring their plans to the Beautification Committee. C. New Plantings at Garden Areas: June Morris and Barbara Bonner measured the four garden areas that contain annuals. June also took pictures and sketched the beds, which she distributed to the Committee members. June Morris, Barbara Bonner and Gloria Vaughn made the following suggestions: 1. City Hall: Suggested planting Elliott's love grass along the back part of the bed behind r, the pittosphorum. In the front of the bed, plant beach sunflowers in a half circle. s Beautification Committee Meeting April 12, 2000 Page 2 ~`"` 2. Five-Way Stop: Suggested taking out some of the dirt and leveling out the bed. Group three coontie palms in a triangular shape in the middle of the bed. Add three clumps of day lilies at each side of the bed and one in the front. Plant purple queen between the day lily clumps. 3. Seminole and Atlantic: Suggested planting muhly grass in front of the Indian hawthorne and purple queen in the front of the bed. 4. Police Department: a) Bed to right of Door: Plant summer petunias between sago palm and fan palm and mulch. b) Bed to left of Door: Re-sod to left of sago palm to make distinct bed. c) Bed to right of Walkway: Finish the circle around the wax myrtle with holly ferns and mulch. d) Bed to left of Walkway: Finish the circle around the wax myrtle with native red salvia and mulch. e) Underneath the sign: Plant beach sunflowers. The Committee agreed with the suggested changes to the flower beds and agreed to do the planting themselves. Gloria Vaughn will prepare a count of plants and Susan Dunham will place the order. D. Determine Date for Election of Officials: Discussion was held regarding the date to hold elections for new officials. Jane Vincent moved that the election of officials take place in September and the new officials take office in October. Barbara Bonner seconded, and the motion carried. V. Announcements/Reports -~ Susan Dunham advised the Committee that a request had been made for a donation of 550 seedlings for the Atlantic Beach Elementary Art Festival scheduled for May 12. The theme of the art festival is 100 years of evolution. The seedlings will be given to the children to take home and plant. After discussion, Gloria Vaughn moved to donate 550 seedlings to the Atlantic Beach Elementary Art Festival. Barbara Bonner seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. VI.
