02-11-98BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE
Minutes of meeting of February 11, 1998
The Beautification Committee met on Wednesday, February 11,
in the Conference Room of City Hall. Present were: June
Morris, Chairperson, Barbara Bonner, Steve Guenther, Gloria
Vaughn, Ron Schiebler, City Gardener, Carl Walker, Coordi-
nator, and guest, Patricia Goeltz.
The meeting was called to order by Chairperson June Morris
at 7:35 PM. Barbara Bonner moved to approve the minutes of
the last meeting, as written. Gloria Vaughn seconded and
the motion passed.
Patricia Goeltz, a member of the Parks & Recreation Advisory
Board, was introduced. She spoke on the forthcoming "Earth
Day" celebration to be held on April 24-26. Ms. Goeltz is
seeking help for Sunday, April 26 from 1 Pm - 4 PM to assist
with native plant identification tours in Howell Park and
distribution of seeds planted in cups.
June Morris voiced that she did not think that the Beautifi-
cation Committee could undertake the task as a group but
she encouraged individual members to help.
Patricia detailed additional information regarding the event
and will get a flyer to Carl to include in the next packet
mailing for the Committee.
On the subject of "Arbor Day", June reported that Barbara H.,
who was unable to attend tonight's meeting, had talked to the
principal at A.B. Elementary wha asked that any planting be
held off until April when the media building with infrastruc-
ture and landscaping was completed. Barbara H., Carl & Ron
will work on the details of this and report at subsequent
meetings.
It was also reported that Barbara Hopson is willing to again
chair the sub-committee for the "Spring Bright Spots" tour,
tentatively set far May. She needs assistance in volunteers
to help select locations, notify owners, distribute and re-
trieve signs, etc. This project will be further discussed at
the next regular meeting.
A general discu
a native garden
could be manned
to bring plants
con's of such a
ssion followed on the subject of location and
or nursery area. It was suggested that it
by volunteers and could be used for citizens
and/or tree seedlings. Various pro's and
project were brought up.
Ron suggested that when the core city project is complete,
consideration could again be focused on the triangular parcel
of land where East Coast Drive and Seminole intersect near
16th St. Carl mentioned that the Tresca property was soon to
be developed into a park and possibly a native garden and/or
growing area could be located there. This idea was further
discussed and Carl will check into the timetable for Tresca
and report at the next meeting.
Ron updated the members on recent landscaping projects, in-
cluding the ends of some of the medians in Atlantic Boulevard
where dirt is being replaced. He also advised that approxi-
mately 75 trees have been trimmed by him and that task should
be .complete, weather permitting, within the next few weeks.
A beautification project in Selves Marina was explained by
Carl and a diagram of the intended planting was passed
around. The residents involved have collected money which
has been turned in and deposited and the project is being
treated the same as the "share-cost" beach access/street end
improvement plans.
Under reports & announcements, Carl advised that he was plan-
ning to retire from the employ of the City later this year,
specifically at the end of the fiscal year, September 30.
He wanted the Committee members to hear it "first hand" and
also to correct any misinformation to the effect that he
would be retiring within the next few weeks.
There was no further business, and the meeting was adjourned
at 8:45 PM.
