01-10-96BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MINUTES Meeting of January 10, 1996 The regular meetirxg of the Committee was held on Wednesday, January 30, 1996, in the Conference Room of City Hall. Pre- sent were: Jacl~ Robbins, Chairman, June Morris, Mimi Ames, Barbara Bonner, Rick Bell, Joanna Fletcher, Guest Allison Johnson, Mayor Lyman T. Fletcher, Ron Schiebler, Gardener, and Carl Walker, Coordinator. 7'he meetirxg was called to order by Jack Robbins at 7:30 PM and a oration made by Joanna Fletcher to approve the minutes of tYxe last meeting, as written. 3une Morris seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Joanna reported on the Holiday Luminaria event and despite the rain on the planned display night of December 17, it was agreed that the event was very successful. Suggestions were made by Joanna, and others, for next ,year's undertaking. Carl reported that a total of $ 1054.00 had been collected representing sales of 527 kits, as compared with last years sale of 200 kits. He also gave special recognii:ion to sev- eral members who were responsible for volume. sales, as well as resident Betty Robertson who will be given special recog- nition for her efforts in promoting the event. Jack distributed and reviecaed the Committee mission & objec- tive plan, 1995 accomplishments, and the task assignment plan for 1996, making changes, additions and/or deletions, as needed. Discussion on the street end beach access beautification pro- gram took place and tYxe Mayor stressed the importance of maintenance of the areas. He also suggested that a "master plan" be drawn up for the accesses. Ways of promoting the "share-cost" with residents were also discussed. Jack reminded the committee of the forthcoming "Spring Bright Spots Taur", asking members to consider ctrairing the event. Carl advised that Robin Saergel had volunteered to help with the tour although she was unable to attend night meetings. Carl reported on plans for the upcoming Arborday celebration, includirxg the tree sale Saturday, January 20, and the acti- vities at Atlantic Beach Elementary school being handled by Barbara Hopson. Letters to nurseries were sent out on Janu- arv 4 and 5 and follow up calls have been made. Members pre- sent volunteered to be at the sale for 2 hours shifts, begin- ning at 9:30 AM. June Morris agreed to be present all day for the event. iNote: Jack Robbins left at 9:00 PM due to another commit- ment; June Morris chaired the remainder of t;he meeting.) The Mayor addressed the group on several general issues in- cluding t}~e i.mportance of maintaining a tree campy within the City, and the planting of replacement trees for those being removed by construction and population growth.
