Meeting of May 8, 1996
`I'Yre regular meeting of the Committee was held on Wednesday,
May 8, 1996, in the Conference Room of Citv Hall. Present
were: June Morris, Vice-Chairperson, Barbara Hopson, Brenda
Wray, I3arbara Bonner, Chucl~ Pendleton, Gloria Vaughn, Jack
Robbins, Ron Schiebler, City Gardener, and Carl Walker, Co-
ox•dirzator.. l11so Present was guest Ben Dinkins.
The meeting was called to order by June Morris at 7:35 PM,
orl behalf of Jack Robbins, Chair, who arrived later during
the meeting.
Berl llinkins, guest, was introduced. He is with the Florida
Native Plant Society and wor,zld like to serve in a "resource"
capacity to the committee to encourage the usage of native
plants. He gave a brief overview on that topic and answered
drzestions. It was recommended, and agreed, that Mr. Dinkins
will address the group at the next regular meeting. with a
pr.esentatiorz to include slides and written material. There
was discussion on landscaping the city property to the south
of tine East Coast. Drive/Seminole Road intersection with na-
ti.ve plantings.

liminary design, wit-.h estimated cost, be prepared for the
abo~-e city property. Barbara, Bonner seconded and the motion
~.>assed urYanimous:ly. Tlris will be further discussed at next
meeting; Rora will draw up a sketch of the area to be included
in the packet mailed prior to the meeting. Mr. Dinkins ad-
vised tizat the best tirrre for planting would be winter so Carl
said the project cost could be included in next ,years budget.
Barbara B, moved to approve the minutes of the last meeting;
the motion was seconded by Barbara H. arzd carried.
Jurzc repox•ted that Jack Robbins had agreed to chair the com-
mittee for another term, if elected, and that she was willing
1,o accept the co-chair position. Barbara B, moved to re-elect
Jack as Chairperson and June as Co-Chairperson for the '96-
'97 term. Barbara i~. seconded; the motion unanimously passed.
Barbara iI. advised that the date for the "Spring Bright Spots
Tour" irad been changed to the weekend of June 1-2. Menrbers
were in agreement to this date for the reasons given by Bar-
°"~ i~ara. A sub-committee meeting will be held on Monday, May 20
to confirm the yards chosen for the tour and to finalize de-
tails of the event.
On the subject of street end beach accesses, June reported
that she and Barbara B. had been working on a desi>;n for 11th
Street avid were recruiting residents to hel~~. Carl will make
flyers that Jt.Ine & Barbara will distribute to neighbors to
enlist their support. Carl reported on the 3rd Street access
complei;ion and status orr others that are in planning stages.
He also distributed a copy of t;he article and photograph of
t}ze 3rd Street access that were published in recent issues of
the Beaches Leader.
Carl & Ron updated the committee on the status of various
landscaped areas of the city including Ahern Street, the me-
dians at Atlantic Boulevard, the "Welcome to Atlantic Beach"
signs, and the tree planting program. On the subject of
the proposed grant by Greenscape for the Atlantic Boulevard
medians, Jack read a letter he was sending to the Mayor &
City Commission, on behalf of the cotruaittee.
Carl distributed copies of an announcement from JEA regarding
the crepe m~=rtle tree "gi~raway" program which will take place
at Mayport Middle sc}zool 021 Saturday, May I8. One gallon
container plants will be available, at no cost.
There was no furt}zer business and the meeting was adjourned
at 9:I5 PM.
