10-09-96BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MINUTES
Meeting of October 9, 1996
The regular meeting of the Committee was held on Wednesday,
October 9, i.n the Conference Room of City Hall. Present were:
June Morris, Vice-Chairperson, Barbara llopson, Mirni Ames,
Brenda Wray, Gloria Vaughn, Ron Schiebler, City Gardener, and
Carl Walker, Coordinator. June Morris called the meeting to
order at 7:35 Pri. A motion was made by Barbara Hopson to ap-
prove the minutes of the last meeting, as written. Mimi Ames
seconded and the motion passed.
Brenda Wray and Barbara Hopson reported for the ."Fall Bright;
Spots Tour" committee, advising that a meeting had recently
taken place and a timetable developed for the event. At that
tune, responsibilities were divided up and the committee will
meet one more time closer to the date of tyre event to select
the propex•ties and make the final plans. Approximately 15
yards are to be ir-cluded and the date for the tour will be on
November 9/10. In the meantime, if any beautification com-
mittee members have any nominations of yards, they should be
passed on to Barbara or Brenda along with a brief description
of why the yard should be chosen.
June Morris lead the discussion on the upcoming ltminaria
event. Cax•1 has placed the order with R A P for 600 kits
and has approximately 120 left from last year in his office.
.Dates for the luminary lighting were discussed; R A P is
having their lighting on December 15, but it was agreed by
the menrbex•s that having it closer to Christmas would be pre-
ferable so Sunday, September 22 was unanimously agreed upon.
The supplies should be available from R A P around November
15-19 and Ron will pick up.
Various ways of marketing the luminaria were discussed and/or
suggested. The system used last year where members took the
orders from neighbors/friends and prepared the kits at home
for disbursement worked very well. Carl will also sell from
his office. Tentatively, December 7 was agreed upon to sell
the kits in Russell Park from apx. 9 or 10 AM until 2 PM.
Volunteers were requested to help out on that date. Also,
the tree lighting is to be held at Donner Park this year and
it was recommended that members could sell kits at that event
also. It was also agreed to keep the selling price at $2..00.
Carl announced that the Commission had approved Ron's status
being changed from part-time to full-time and the budget ad-
justed accordingly. This is effective on October 15.
fihe status on various projects were explained by Ron includ-
ing the changing of all beds and landscape areas from "summer
annuals" to fall/winter plantings. Ron also stressed that
areas were needed to transplant the plants from the medians
of Atlantic Boulevard.
Carl asked that members be thinking ahead for any projects
which could be included in this years expenditures, either
suggestions for planting/landscaping areas or programs which
the committee could sponsor. He explained that possibly there
might be some surplus in tl~ie beautification budget which
could be used for this purpose.
There was no further business and June adjourned the meeting
at 8:45 PM.
