08-09-95 BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE Minutes of Meeting of August 9, 1995 The regular meeting was held on Wednesday, August 9, in Conference Room. Present were: Brenda Wray, Mimi Ames, Chuck Pendleton, Bruce Tusher, Carl Walker, Coordinator, Ron Schieb1er, City Gardener. the and The meeting was called to order at 7:35 PM by Carl Walker fn the absence of the Chairman and Vice Chairman. An error was pointed out in the minutes of the last meeting (third line of third paragraph reads "....Jack Morris" corrected to read "..Jack Robbins",) Chuck Pendleton moved to approve the min- utes, as corrected. Bruce Tusher seconded and the motion passed. Ron Schiebler reported that he recently weeded and edged all of the committee landscaped areas. The landscaping around the "mailbox" at the Seminole Road/Plaza intersection is com- pleted and many compliments on its appearance have been re- ceived. Ron passed around photos showing the area prior to, during, and after the re-landscaping efforts. He also advised that new plants have been ordered as replacements at several of our locations including the entrance to city hall. Brenda Wray gave the status on her efforts for the Atlantic Blvd. median adoptior~~ program. Of the existing 11 medians, a total of 8 have no4v been committed, including the 2 which have already been landscaped. So far, $2400.00 has been col- lected and deposited, with other checks forthcoming. She has personally visited 30 business. Brenda distributed copies of an updated flyer showing which medians have been "adopted". She was recognized and thanked for all her efforts. An up-date on task assignments was deferred since a revised print out was not available at the meeting. Carl led a dis- cussion on the forthcoming holiday luminary project. The tentative date of Saturday, December 9, was agreeable to-the members for the luminary kit sale. It was .suggested that it be held on the City Hall parking lot, closer to Seminole Road instead of the park pavilion. This would make it more visible to passing traffic in the same manner as last year's Arbor Day tree sale. Other ways to promote the event were also discussed. The date(s) for' the luminary lighting was also tentatively agreed upon by consensus of the members present. It was felt that one night instead of two would increase participation. The date chosen was Saturday, December 16. C 'y Carl advised that he did not yet have a schedule for budget workshops showing the dates departments are to be reviewed. When he gets that information, he will let all members know. Otherwise, the budget process is on schedule. Bruce Tusher reported on the upcoming "Fall Bright Spots" tour to be held on October 6 and October 7. After explaining the purpose and goals of the event, he distributed copies of the draft of the flyer that he and Jack Robbins had prepared. Some minor errors in the draft were corrected. Bruce elabor- ated on the categories shown and asked that the members make nominations to be turned in no later than August 23. He also explained the schedule that he and Jack had prepared for the promotion and selection process for the event. Some questions were asked ar~d suggestions made. Chuck Pendleton reported that the J. F. Kennedy aircraft car- rier was due at Mayport on September 22 and as a part of the celebration of its arrival, a clean-up of Mayport Road was planned for September 16. Carl advised that for the second year, .the children's summer drama camp sponsored by ABET had donated a collection from their performance intermissions to the Committee. This year the donation totaled approximately $135.00, an increase over the amount given last year. It was suggested that the funds be used in beautification efforts on the Community Center grounds. There was no further business and the meeting was adjourned at 8:50 PM. 2 _
