Champion/Challenger Tree: Chair Mears informed the board that she researched "champion"
trees with the Department of Forestry who advised that a "champion" tree was determined by
several criteria to include history, height and diameter. She stated that she found that there were
only 20 "champion" trees in the entire state of Florida. Building Official Ford advised that the
Tree Conservation Board had designated five "champion" trees since he had been assisting the
board, and they were all located in Tresca Park. The board discussed how to save trees such as a
36" oak. Chair Mears requested that the city purchase a book from the State of Florida which
included the definitions of "champion" and "challenger" trees. Discussion was held with regard
to possibly changing the ordinance to include the definition of "challenger" trees.
