MARCH 28, 2011
STAFF REPORT
City of Atlantic Beach
Commission Meeting
AGENDA ITEM: Request to apply for a Neighborhood Grant
DATE: March 17, 2011
SUBMITTED BY: Timmy Johnson, Recreation & Special Events Director
BACKGROUND: Staff is requesting authorization to apply for funding through the
Beaches Resource Center Neighborhood Grant Program.
Neighborhood grants are funds dispersed by a group of
neighborhood volunteers who serve on an oversight committee.
The funds for neighborhood grants are to be used for programs
and services aimed at empowering student and family success
within their neighborhood. The application deadline is April 1,
2011 and allocations are made in April and May.
If the grant is awarded to the City, then the funds will be used to
enhance the summer camp programs at Donner and Jordan Park
Community Centers. Staff will hire neighborhood teenagers to
work during the summer at each center, which will increase the
number of kids that attend the camp, provide for separation by
age group, give the ability to have group activities inside and
outside, and make the camp safer by having two employees at
each camp instead of one. The teens will work a total of 300
hours each during the summer.
BUDGET: No budget is required to submit grant application.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Authorize staff to submit a Neighborhood Grant Application to
enhance the summer camp programs at Donner and Jordan Park
Community Centers in the amount of $5,000.
