GENERAL CONDITIONS The standard form of General Conditions of The Contract for Engineering Construction, 1953 Edition, as published jointly by the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Associated General Contractors of America and Special Conditions noted below shall form a part of these apecificationa and shall be made a part of this Contract and all Sub - Contracts for the work. All Contracts and Sub - Contracts shall be made in strict conformity to the stipulations of these specifications. 1 SPECIAL CONDITIONS Contractor shall furnish and install all temporary light and power facilities during the work and make all necessary temporary connections to water and other services required for the work. Contractor shall confine his apparatus, the storage of materials, and the operations of his workmen to limits indicated by law, ordinances, permits or directions of the Engineer and shall not unreasonably encumber the premises with hie materials. Contractor shall obtain and pay for all necessary permits, temporary licenses, certificates of final teat, including certificate of occupancy, where such permits, licenses or certi- ficates are prescribed by Local or State Ordinances, Rules or Regulations. Contractor shall be responsible for the accuracy of all lines and grades for all parts of the work. He shall do all field work necessary to layout and maintain the work and shall make available to the Engineer all facilities and information necessary for properly checking the accuracy of such field work. Such checking shall in no way relieve the Contractor of his responsibility for the correctness of all field work. Contractor shall keep the Engineer and the Owner advised as to the progress bf the work and he shall notify them at least 48 hours in advance of the time he will require equip- ment or woik to be furnished and installed by Company or others under this Contract. h.. DEFINITIONS "Company" - Shall be the American Oil Company unless specified otherwise. "Owner" - Shall be the individual, partnership, firm, or corporation with whom the Contractor has executed a Contract for the work. "Contractor" - Shall be the individual, partnership, firm, or corporation to whom the work has been awarded. "Engineer" - Shall be an appointed engineering representative of The American Oil Company. "Work" - Shall include all labor and materials, except as specifically noted. 5. Contractor shall check and verify all drawings and specifications for the work so he be entirely familiar with the work before proceeding. will 6 SCOPE OF WORK (a) Contractor shall furnish all materials, labor, equipment, etc., with the exception those described in Paragraph ni" of this section, required to build, equip antinn of every respect complete the service station according to these specifications and plans attached. Plans and specifications shall be interpreted together so that when the Contract is completed, the work will be finished in every respect to the full intent and purpose of the Contract Documents. (b) Where work is performed at an existing service station which is to be kept in operation, the Contractor's work shall be carried out with a minimum of interference with the operation of the service station. (c) Contractor shall clear the site of all existing building construction and other obstruc- tions. All existing walls, foundations, etc. in the way of new foundations must be com- pletely removed to a depth of 18" below finished grade, or to a greater depth if requires' by the work covered by the drawings or the specification. All wrecked and removed material shall become the property of the Contractor and shall be removed from the site at his oi1 'expense, unless otherwise specified. (d) Contractor shall obtain and pay for all permits required to carry provide electrical inspection, certificate and occupancy permit, if req nc out q u c by rocaon, Authorities, when construction is complete. ui red by Local. (e) Contractor shall establish lines and grades, and lay out all work as required by the drawings, subject to supervisory check by the Engineer. Contractor shall clear entire site of all brush, trees and debris of any nature, and remove same from site. Engineer shall be notified three (3) days in advance in order to check building layout and floor grade before footings are poured. (f) Contractor shall provide temporary connections and extensions of lines for telephone, electricity, water, sewage disposal, etc. as required and pay all costs and fees for these services during construction. This paragraph applied to reconstruction of exist- ing service stations which are to be kept in operation, as well as new stations. (g) All permanent service connections of water, sewer, electricity and all necessary ex- eavating, backfilling, replacement of pavements, and all other work necessary for same shall be included in Contract. All water, sewer, drain and electrical lines shall be installed by the Contractor where shown on drawings. (h) Moving Utilities - No trees, sidewalks, curbing, etc, on public property shall be re- moved or relocated by the Contractor without having first secured written permission or permits from same from the Local Authorities having jurisdiction. The cost of removal or relocation of telephone poles, electric and power poles, street signs, manholes, catch - basins, police and fire alarm boxes, traffic sign poles, aillbox poles, et etc. in way of new construction is included in this Contract whether shown on drawings or not. FRESH WATER SUPPLY Where flesh water supply is not available at the site, the Contractor shall provide satis- factory water supply by well or otherwise and connection to service station building. SE 4.2 AND WASH WATT DISP OSAL Where sanitary and storm sewer connections are not available, the Contractor shall provide and install Septic Tank sewage disposal system for ten to twelve users as required by State Regulations and a Dry Well of sufficient capecity to dispose of water required to wash three cars per hour as required by local Governing.Authorities. 9, EARTHWORK Provide all necessary grading and excavation for all foundations, water and sewer lines, electrical conduit, paving, curbs, drains and as otherwise required by the drawings and these specifications. Grading of lot to be done in accordance with the grades shown on the Ground Plan. Building foundations shall be carried to a depth as shown on the drawings below the existing ground elevation, or to a greater c'epth if necessary to reach firm bearing soil. Where existing cellars, basements or other excavations require greater depth than shown, the foundations shall be carried to such depths by the Contractor at no extra expense to the Owner. All water lines shall have one (1) foot cover of earth, or more as required to place lines below frost line. No underground electric conduit line shall be allowed to pass over or under any pipeline carrying gasoline or oil. Where rock occurs and footings or walls are indicated to rest on same the rock shall be leveled to a clean, even, hard surface. Sloping rook for bearings shall be stepped and treated in the same manner. All blasting, if required, shall be done in acoordance with local ordinances by skilled operators and all necessary precautions shall be taken to avoid damage. Removal of rock at party lines shall : done by line drilling. Where filling is required to bring an area up to proper grade, same shall consist only of good clean exc vated material. No organic matter or rubbish shall be used for this pur. pose and no loam shall be used. All fill must be wetted, tamped or rolled in layers of six (6) inches so as to form a compact mass equal to the surrounding undisturbed soil. Damage to structure and paving due to faulty fill shall be immediately corrected at Contractor's expense. Contractor shall guarantee all work called for in these plans and specifications for a period of ONE YEAR from the date of formal acceptance of the project in its entirety. All finished grades shall be established by Contractor as shown on the Ground Plan and all elevations and sub - grades shall be checked by the Engineer before any work is started. 10. CONCRETE WORK Sidewalks and other paving outside the property line shall be constructed in accordance with the Standard Specifications of the Local Authorities having jurisdiction. &pension joints extending from the sub -grade to the finished grade shall be placed at inter- vals of approximately 20' in each direction over the driveway areas within the property lines, along the property, along curbing or rained platforms or islands and at equipment foundations. Joints shall be an approved 1/2" bituminous type expansion joint material installed in an open joint with the top of the material finishing slightly below the finished grade of the concrete. Edges of the concrete paving at expansion joint locations shall be slightly rounded off with a steel tool to prevent spelling of the concrete. 8/27/59 0 CONCRETE WORK CONTINT(ED Floor slabs shall be floated to a uniform grade as required and finished smooth with steel trowels. Floors shall be colored with Tile Red Colorundum using no less than 0.5 ibs. of Colorundum per square foot of floor. Colorundum shall be applied in strict accordance with directions of manufacturer, the A. C. Horn Company. Concrete shall be spaded or vibrated, without excess, to insure proper filling of forms and to help prevent stone pockets or honeycombs. After forms are removed, the work shall be inspected and all stone pockets or other voids on exposed edges shall be grouted with mortar and rubbed to a smooth finish. Manhole frames, tank fill boxes and gauging boxes will be furnished by the Company, but shall be set to the proper grade by the Contractor, slightly above the surrounding grade to prevent water pockets at the boxes. They shall be set in a separate section of concrete, approxi- mately 24" square, and isolated from the surrounding concrete with construction joints so the boxes may be'removed without causing excessive damage to the surrounding work. U CULVERTS AND DROP IFLETS Contractor shall._.fgrnish and install culverts and drop inlets as shown on the drawings or as required by .State, County or Local Authorities. 12. MASONRY WORK Mortar for masonry work shall be an approved brand of mortar mix or shall be mixed from one (1) part Portland Cement, three (3) parts clean sharp sand and not more than.1O hydrated lime added to improve working qualities. Mixture shall be of a proper consistency for the work and shall be uniform in color throughout. Concrete blocks shall be uniform standard size, smooth face, well cured building units con- forming to the current specifications of the A.S.T.M. as to absorption and strength. They shall have firm sharp edges and corners with an even textured surface free from defects. Blocks shall be at least 10 days old before delivery to the site. Special block shall be used at corners, jambs and for closures. Brick shall be a common, hard burned clay brick of standard size or concrete brick of standard size. Salmon or soft brick will not be allowed in any of the -work. Masonry work shall be constructed to the full dimensions shown on the drawings and shall be built plumb, level, and true to a line. Contractor shall install all sleeves, anchors, keys, chases or opening as may be required for work of all trades as the work progresses. If Architectural Porcelain Enamel is to be installed on the exterior of the building `(See Sheets #14 and #15), Contractor will be held responsible for constructing all masonry work to within 1/4" of dimensions shown on Drawings. Masonry Drawings are to be furnished to Contractor by Architectural Porcelain Enamel Fabricator for erection of masonry work if Por.celaip Enamel is to be installed on exterior of building. Mortar joints shall be 3/8" in thickness and shall be uniform throuthout the work. Masonry shall be set in a full bed of Mortar. Block or brick shall be shoved up tight against pre- viously laid work to insure well filled uniform mortar joints. Excess mortar shall be squeezed out of the joint and trimmed off with a trowel as the work progresses. Exposed joints on the exterior where not stuccoed or otherwise finished and on the interior where not plastered or otherwise finished shall be V'd with a steel tool in a neat workmanlike manner, removing all excess mortar. After the joints have been struck, they shall be lightly brushed.asothey will be smooth and uniform. All mortar splashings shall be removed as the work progresses. - 6- 8 /27/59 Rev. 6/6/60 13. CERAMIC TILE - REST ROOMS The Wainscots and floors of the Rest Rooms shall be finished with ceramic tile. All work shall be done in a neat, workmanlike manner by skilled mechanics, and the finished work shall be free from defects of any nature. All Ceramic Tile shall be manufactured by "THE MOSAIC TILE COMPANY" or an approved equal. Sizes of tile shall be as listed below. Color shall be approved by Engineer. Tile numbers Listed below are MOSAIC TILE COMPANY numbers: ITEM SIZE MOSAIC COLOR & NUMBER Cap 2 "x 6" No. 1012 - Blue Field 4 "x 4" No. 1012 - Blue Base 3 3/8 "x 6" No. 1012 - Blue Floor Pattern No. 2183 -VAAA Light Blue & Dark Blue Height of Wainscot shall be 5' -10" above finished floor. Contractor shall install one Mosaic No. 8A7116X6 recessed Ceramic Tile paper holder in each Rest Room of the same color as Wainscoting. Upon completion, all tile work shall be thoroughly cleaned with a mild solution of muriati acid, All.damage to the tile work shall be repaired by Tile Contractor upon completion of job whether damage was caused by his workman or not. 4._ i'.AULKING All openings in exterior walls, and interior openings that are not to be trimmed shall be caulked. Caulking Compound shall be of an approved manufacturer, white color, gun grade and free from materials that will stain the surrounding work. Compound shall be forced in the joint to be filled with a pressure gun with proper size tip for the work and joints shall be completely filled without excess. Joints over 1/2" in depth shall be filled with caulking cotton before applying compound. Joints to be caulked shall be thoroughly cleaned of mortar and other foreign materials and pointed up before caulking is done. 15. LATHING AND PLASTERING (WHEN CALLED FOR IN FINISH SCHEDULE OF PLANS) All stud walls and all ceiling areas, where finish schedule calls for plaster (See Sheet 2 of Building Plains) are to be lathed with Hyrib Metal Lath weighing not less than three (3) pounds per square yard. All lathing shall be securely fastened with proper laps in a neat workmanlike manner. Plaster when called for on the Drawings shall consist of ome scratch coat, one brown coat, and one smooth white coat finished for enamel painting. - 8/27 -59 Rev.5 /12/60 15. LATHING AND PLASTERING - CONTINUED Plastering shall be applied as three (3) coat work, to a full 3/4" thickness. Each coat shall be well scratched and dampened before the succeeding coat is applied. The finish white coat shall be trowelled to a smooth, hard finish, free from defects, straight, plumb and true to a line. 16. SHEET METAL WORK All necessary metal guttering, down - spouting, coping, etc., shall be installed as called for on the drawings. All sheet metal, except thru -wall flashing, shall be #26 gauge galvanized metal of an approved manufacturer. Thru -wall flashing shall be of dovetail design as manufactured by "Cheney Flashing Company" or approved equal. Flash- ing shall be fabricated of "CHINC" #10 (.012" thick). Flashing shall be turned down 6" on exterior face of walls and shall be turned down 4" over roofing return on interior face of wall. Lap joints shall be as recommended by manufacturer. Bed flashing top and bottom well into mortar joint so as to form perfect bond. 17. STEEL AND IRON WORK Structural steel members shall be of sections shown on the drawings fabricated from materials conforming to the latest specifications of the A.I.S.C. Installations shall be complete in every detail including all necessary plates, anchors and connection. Steel work shall be set at the proper height as required and shall have proper bearings on the masonry or other supporting members. Erect plumb, level, and true to a line and anchor in place as shown on the Drawings. Steel sash shall be installed as shown on the Drawings, manufactured by Truscon Steel Company, or an approved equal, complete with all hardware, fittings, anchors and locking devices. Sash shall be set as the work progresses and securely anchored in place as recommended by the manufacturer or as otherwise shown on the Drawings. Floor drain in the Washing Section shall be as called for on the plans. Reinforcing steel for concrete work shall be steel mesh or deformed bars of sizes shown on the Drawings. All reinforcing shall be completely covered by the concrete, properly braced and positioned so it will not become dislocated before the concrete is poured. Structural steel work and steel sash shall be given one (1) coat of an approved metal primer at the shop after fabrication and before delivery to the site. 18. JALOUSIE WINDOWS Jalousies shall be of a type and size as shown on the drawings and shall be installed in accordance with the best practices of this type work. 19. TOILET PARTITIONS Contractor shall furnish and erect, where indicated on the plans, Metal Flush Type Toilet Partitions as manufactured by the Mills Company, 965 Wayside Road, Cleveland, Ohio; and stocked and distributed by Maxwell and Hitchcock, Inc., 191 Simpson Street, N. W., Atlanta, Georgia, or an approved equal. Partitions will have baked on Light Blue Enamel Finish to match American Oil Company Standard Paint Color No. IGB402. -8- 8-27-59 Rev. 10 -10 -60 20. TIRE RACK & SHELVING Contractor shall furnish and install prefabricated display and storage shelving and tire racks as shown on the drawings. 21. ROOF CONSTRUCTION Contractor shall furnish and install a 4 -ply built -up tar and gravel roof as called for on plans and furnish owner with a 15 year written guarantee covering roof against any and all leaks resulting from faulty workmanship and /or materials. 22. SHOW WINDOW CONSTRUCTION AND GLAZING Store front show windows, sash bars, etc. shall be "PITTCO" as shown on plans, or an approved equal. Sash bars and 1/4" best quality plate glass shall be set in glazing or caulking compound so the finished installation will be absolutely water tight. Sash bars shall be securely anchored in place and the entire installation shall be made in strict accordance with the manufacturer's specifications. 23. GLAZING - GENERAL Main entrance door and show windows shall be glazed with best quality American Plate Glass 1/4" thick. All steel sash shall be glazed with D.S.B. quality window glass, unless other- wise noted on the plans. Rest Room windows and doors shall be glazed with D.S.B. obscure glass. All glass shall be securely set in glazing compound and shall be as manufactured by Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company, or an approved equal. The Contractor shall furnish and install mirrors in Rest Rooms as called for on the plans. 24. PAINTING WORK The Contractor shall furnish all labor, material, equipment, etc. to paint the exterior and interior of the building in accordance with painting schedule shown on the Drawings. All paint shall be as manufactured by the John Lucas Company, Inc., Philadelphia, Penn,, or an approved equal, of number specified in the schedule (see drawings). All primer shall be tinted to the approximate shade of the finish paint. Before painting, all surfaces shall be inspected and damages or defects corrected so the surfaces are in first -class condition before the paint is applied. The Contractor shall take every precaution to protect the surrounding work. All surfaces shall be clean, dry, free from dust and grease or other defects. Each coat shall be allowed to dry before applying succeeding coat and all paint shall be well brushed-in to completely cover the surface, free from holidays, runs or other defects. Dam -roofs shall preferably p er be applied with compressed air equipment, but in any case the walls shall be coated so as to damp proof. Inside of parapet walls shall be water - proofed with approved Bituminous Compound. 6,, STUCCO WORK Exterior masonry surfaces of the building, when celled for on the building plans to be finished with stucco, shall be dampened before applying the stucco and where stucco is over Wood or metal the surface shall be coverer with metal stucco mesh for the proper bond of the stucco. Stucco shall be applied in two coats, each coat approximately 3/8" in thickness. Finish coat shall be plumb and true, trowelled to a smooth hard finish, free from defects, with steel trowels. Corners shall be slightly rounded to prevent spelling of the stucco. Iortar for all coats shall be mixed in proportions of one (1) volume of cement to approxi- mately three (3) Volumes of aggregate. Hydrated lime in a content of approximately ten (10) pounds per bag of Portland Cement may be used when required. Measurements shall be accurate. Successive batches shall be proportioned exactly ai;,ne. Aggregate, cement and other dry ingredients shall be mixed thoroughly before water is added. 2z AND MILLWORK Lumber for framing work shall be #1 grade of structural pine, fir or other approved grade of structural lumber that is available locally. It shall be of sizes noted on the Drawings, thoroughly seasoned, dressed four sides and free from defects. Millwork shall be fabricated from #1 grade Ponderosa Pine or Cypress, clear and free from any defects. Surfaces shall be sanded to a bright smooth surface at the mill after fab- rication and shall be prime coated with lead in oil paint on all sides and edges after fitting and before erection. Protect and store materials in a dry location at the site in a flat position to prevent warping or distortion until erected. All nails in millwork shall be set and the holes filled with wood filler. Install all rough woodwork, grounds, blocking and nailer strips and such other carpentry work as required to co$plete the work. All work shall be erected plumb level, and true and securely anchored in place with proper bearing. All doors shall be 1 -3/4" or 1 -3/8" thick as shown on Drawings. Frames shall be rabbeted 3/8 ". Transoms shall be 1 -3/4" thick with a drip mold at the bottom and hinged at the bottom to swing in. 1 8 PLUMBING WORK The contractor shall provide and rake all necessary extensions and connection of sewer, ..10- 8 -27 -59 Rev. 1 -28 -60 28. PLUMBING WORK CONTINUED drain, and water lines, furnish and install all fixtures, piping, soil, vent and drain lines, and do all work required to complete the plumbing installation in all its parts ready for operation. All water lines shall have a minimum covering of one (1) foot of earth. The entire plumbing installation shall be made in conformity with the require- ments of the local or other Authorities having jurisdiction. All underground soil and drain pipe within the building and within twenty (20) feet of the building shall be extra heavy cast iron pipe. Cast iron fittings shall be sanitary type, long sweep, of standard or extra weight as required. All joints between cast iron pipe shall be caulked with oakum and pig lead. Joints to be run full length at one pouring and caulked solid flush with hub. All connections be- tween iron and steel pipe shall be made with special fittings for this type of connection. Where terra cotta pipe is permitted by Local Authorities and approved by the Owner's Engineer, such pipe shall be standard vitreous clay pipe, laid to proper and uniform grade with all joints well caulked with oakum and cement mortar. All sewer and drain lines shall be provided with proper cleanouts. All water pipe shall be Type "K" soft temper, copper water tubing, as manufactured by Chase Brass & Copper Company, or approved equal, using sweated copper fittings. Connecting lines from water main! shall be 1 -1/4" copper tubing with 1 -1/4" x 16" capped air chamber at highest point of line. One inch (1 ") lines shall extend to all fixtures in Ladies' and Men's Rest Rooms and no smaller than 3/4" tubing shall be used leading to other outlets. Where existing iron or steel pipe water supply lines are required to be extended, the new supply lines shall be wrought iron or galvanized steel pipe of approved manufacturer. Lines shall have drips and valves for draining. Lines shall be tested under 100# hydrastatic pressure. All cleanouts for Rest Room fixtures shall be placed on Storage Room side of the wall. All pipes, vents, etc., shall be concealed, wherever possible. A frost -proof hydrant and drain shall be installed on the exterior of the Lube Bays when shown on the Ground Layout. Hydrant to be Woodford, Non - Freeze, Style 8, Chrome Finish Wheel Handle, or approved equal. Provide an approved type floor drain in Lubrication Section where shown on Drawing and connect to drain in Washing Section. Connect drain in Washing Section to Storm Sewer or Dry Well as applicable. The Contractor shall provide and install plumbing fixtures, as indicated on the Drawings, complete with individual shutoff valves and all fittings. Unless otherwise specified, the fixtures shall be as manufactured by the American Radiator & Standard Sanitary Corporation. 29. HOT MIX - HOT LAID - ASPHALTIC CONCRETE PAVING BASE COURSE Base course shall consist of a one course foundation of crushed rock or slag, or a substitute approved by the Engineer in writing. Rock or slag base shall be compacted to a minimum depth of six inches, composed of aggregate and screenings constructed on a properly prepared subgrade. Aggregate for rock or slag base course shall be clean, tough, durable crushed rock or slag having a "LOS ANGELES" abrasion of not less than fifty percent when compacted by shaking to refusal. Aggregate for rock or slag shall be graded to the following requirements, free from excessive flat or elongated pieces. -11 4/12/60 29. All segregated fine or course stone shall be removed and replaced with well graded stone. The course aggregate shall be rolled with a three wheel power roller, weighing not less than ten tons, until it is compacted to a firm, even surface. After the course aggregate has been rolled satisfactorily, screenings shall be spread with shovels over the course aggregate in thin layers and rolled dry until no more screenings can be forced into the voids, after which the surface shall be sprinkled with water and rolled. The sprinkling and rolling shall be continued and additional screenings applied where necessary until the course stone is well bonded and firmly set for its entire depth. The completed base course shall be true to a line and grade. SURFACE COURSE The bituminous surface course shall be applied over the base course and shall have a compacted minimum depth of two inches after rolling, in accordance with the following specifications. The surface course shall consist of a hot plant mix and hot laid bituminous bound mat, con- structed in one course on the prepared base, to the depth required, conforming to specifi- cation A -2 -b of the Asphalt Institute. The base to be surfaced shall be well bonded and evenly compacted. Immediately prior to application of tack coat, all dust, dirt, or other foreign materials shall be removed. On the prepared surface a bituminous tack coat from one tenth to fifteen hundredths of a gallon of the same type of material as used in the mix, shall be applied. The tack coat shall be applied for the full width of the area to be surfaced by means of a pressure distributor. After application of the tack coat, the Contractor shall keep all traffic off the surface until the material has dried sufficiently not to pick up under traffic. After the tack coat has thoroughly dried, hot plant mix surface course shall be spread in a uniform loose layer of sufficient thickness to give, when compacted, the required thickness. After spreading and screening, the mixture shall be thoroughly and uniformly compacted by a tandem roller weighing not less than ten tons. Rolling shall start longitudinally at the sides and proceed toward the center, overlapping on successive trips by at least one half the width of the rear roller. Rolling shall be continued until a firm, thoroughly compacted surface has been obtained. As soon as the surface has been compacted by rolling, the surface shall be evenly covered by the use of mechanical spreaderp or by hand with from ten to eighteen pounds per square yard of #7 aggregate and broom dragged until all surface voids are filled. -12- 4/12/6n 29. - CONTINUED All materials shall be as specified above or as approved by State Road Department, RY INCLUDED Contract shall include all necessary labor and materials required for paving the areas shown on the drawings with asphaltic concrete paving. Surrounding concrete work, buildings, platforms, and islands shall be protected in an approved manner to prevent damages from asphalt spray or from heaver equipment. All damages caused by the Contractor shall be repaired to the satisfaction of the Engineer at the Contractor's expense„ GUARANTEE Contractor agrees to replace all defective work and repair all damages caused ry defective materials of faulty workmanship for a period of one (1) year after completion of the work. 30 —FINAL INSPECTION The Contractor shall do all necessary* work in connection with the work of electricians and plumbers, etc., that may be necessary to put the building in first —class condition after the Sub— Contractors have finished their work and shall clean off all spots, stains, or blen.._' and shall wash all windows and leave the building broom clean and in perfect repair and ordc -% ready for immediate use and occupancy. The Contractor shall and hereby does guarantee by signing these specifications that all work will be free from defects of materials and workmanship for a period of one (1) year from the date of final acceptance of this work unless otherwise specified. CONTRACTOR'S SIGNATURE — 13 — 4/12/60 ARCHITECTURAL PORCELAIN ENAMEL GENERAL - The contractor shall furnish and install porcelain.enameled steel on the Service Station Building as indicated on the drawings or called for in these specifications. STRIPES AND BASE - The porcelain enameled panels shall have red feature stripes and blue bases of sizes indicated on the drawings. The porcelain fabricator shall mask out at the factory the blue bases and red stripes with green ecotchcal material with pressure sensitive back and tape face. Scotchcal material to be applied by porcelain enamel fabricator in a neat and workmanlike manner, over all red and blue face areas, including the portion of flange or edge of porcelain enamel pans that will, after erection and caulking, be exposed. Scotchcal material will be furnished by Amoco at Amoco's expense. The American Oil Company will have scotchcal material shipped direct from supplier to porcelain enamel fabricator for each fabrication pp p job. Materials will be available in four foot lengths with paper back. Base masking will be 8 -1/8" wide material to cover the 8" base. Stripe masking materials will be 2 -1/8" wide material to cover 2" stripe. Amount of masking materials furnished for bases and stripes will be linear amount equal to the overall dimension of elevations receiving porcelain finish, less door openings, plus returns at doors plus returns at ends plus 5% Amount of masking materials furnished for two (2 ") inch stripes above doorlintels a linear amount equal to twice the overall elevation dimensions receiving porcelain finish, including return at ends, plus 5% for waste. STANDARDS OF MANUFACTURE - The manufacture of all materials under this section of sepcifi- cations shall be in accordance with the latest edition of the "STANDARDS FOR MANUFACTURE OF ARCHITECTURAL PORCELAIN ENAMEL" as published by the "ARCHITECTURAL DIVISION OF THE POR- CELAIN INSTITUTE", 1010 Vermont Avenue, N.W., Washington, 5, D.C. In eneral shall be approximately square with narrow trim pieces. size shall g wa panels The with the dasign. Raw edges shall not be exposed in any ofthework.No variation of color will be allowed and no visible defects will be accepted. All porcelain enamel shall be acid resistant, Grade A -A, fused to special grade 16 Gauge enameling steel. Panels shall be fabricated accurately to with 1/32 ". Deflection across the face of the panels shall not exceed 1/8" and waviness or plural buckling will not be acceptable. The area of any single panel shall not exceed seven (7) square feet. Fastening lugs and screws shall be stainless steel or non - rusting metal. Each panel shall have at least four (4) lugs and shall be screwed or bolted securely in place. SHOP DRAWINGS AND SAMPLES- Porcelain enamel fabrication and erection drawinoc showing panel layout dimensions, stripes, sections, joining, bending, anchoring, shall be submitted to the Engineer for approval, a 6" x 6" sample of enameling steel c• shall also be submitted to the Engineer for approval of colors, surface texture, etc. prior to proceeding with any work covered under this section of the specifications. JOINTING AND CAULKING WORK - Joints shall be accurately fitted so the space between panels shall not be less than 1/8" nor more than 1/4" in width and shall be uniform throughout the work. All panels and returns shall be accurately formed and lined up with adjoining units. All joints between porcelain enamel panels and at windows and door openings and otherwise shall be caulked with white "Thiokol" base cauling compound (Hornflex -EX LP -32) as manu- factured by the A. C. Horn Company or an approved equal. catalyst and application of the caulking compound shall be done ginfstrictaaccordancedwith and manufacturers instructions. -14- 8/27/59 Rev. 2/26/60 ARCHITECTURAL PORCELAIN ENAMEL - CONTINUED ERECTION - Installation of materials shall be performed by experienced erection crews and in strict accordance with the manufacturer's erection drawings and instructions. All shall be fastened direct to masonry with all fastening devices concealed unless otherwise specified and all joints shall be weather tight. Where holes are required to receive the work of others, same shall be located and cut by Porcelain Enamel Erector. All materials shall be carefully handled, unloaded, and protected both before and after erection. Damaged or defective panel will not be accepted and shall be replaced by Porcelain Enamel Contractor before Porcelain Enamel will be accepted. GUARANTEE - Contractor agrees to furnish, deliver, and replace on the building any materials which fail, because of defects or faulty workmanship within two (2) years after completion of the service station.. Contractor shall also deliver to the Owner of Engineer a written guarantee from Lis supplier guaranteeing all porcelain panels against fading, flaking, or deterioration of any nature for a period of ten (10) years from the date of acceptance. COMP LET O - After all porcelain panels have been installed the shall be thoroughly cleaned to the complete satisfaction of the En i gineerwith cleaning compound contiaining no harsh abrasives or other materials that will affect the porcelain enamel finish.
