Agenda Item 10CAGENDA ITEM # I OC APRIL 23, 2012 Hanson, Jim From: Mark, Maria Sent: Thursday, April 12, 2012 10:14 AM To: Bartle, Donna Cc: Borno, Mike; Hanson, Jim; Classey, Michael Subject: Agenda Item - Speed Study for Mayport Road Donna: Would you please add to the next agenda "Speed Study for Mayport Road" under my name. Jim /Mike /Mayor: Over the course of the last few months, several citizens have voiced their concern about the speed limit on Mayport Road; I have my own concerns as well. To that end, I called FDOT and spoke with Jerry Ausher, our District Traffic Engineer and inquired about what can be done to review the speed limit on Mayport Road. He stated they could conduct a speed study and then issue a recommendation. I asked him to go ahead and do this. He said they would do the study in the next couple of weeks and would be able to give us a report shortly after that. If the study shows that a speed reduction is warranted, they will send a notice to Chief Classey and schedule with their (FDOT) maintenance dept to change the signs. I asked what would be some of the factors considered in the speed analysis. He stated one of the factors that may have an affect would be any changes in the roadway (i.e., addition of medians, landscaping, etc.) anything that would make the driver feel more constrained vs. a wide -open highway. I told him of the beautification efforts along Mayport, which included raised medians, palm trees and landscaping. He said those could be influencing factors to reducing the speed. I just wanted to alert you and I plan to formally share this with the commission at the next meeting. If you have any questions or would like to further discuss, please LMK. Sincerely, Maria Mark Mayor Pro Tempore Atlantic Beach City Commission 904.707.3584 "Character is who you are when no one is watching." 1
