CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH
Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, June 26, 2012
Adele Grage Cultural Center
6:00 p.m.
Present: Chair Lori Gaglione, Lynne Roskein, Cris Garrard, Jolyn Johnson, Jay Shoots, Jeff Wight with
Timmy Johnson (City liaison) and Karen Kempf (recording).
Excused: Tammy Lally, Wanda Martin. Absent: Hollie Stephens
1. Call to order - Chair Lori Gaglione called the meeting to order at 6:05 pm.
2. Approval of Meeting Minutes - The committee reviewed the April 24, 2012 minutes.
Lynne move to accept the minutes as written and Cris seconded the motion. The minutes
were unanimously approved.
3. New CARAC member jay Shoots was welcomed by the committee.
4. Ongoing Business
a. Events, Updates, Reports
i. Arts in the Park financial report- Jolyn tabled this report until the July
meeting.
ii. Wednesday Market- Jeff reported that the market is still doing well. DIG
(Dutton Island Gardeners) has shown interest in taking the coordination
of the market over from Jeff and the committee. Jeff will need to go to
the City Commission with this information.
Jeff also asked the committee to approve a design for market bumper
stickers. After discussion, the committee voted on approving the
printing of the stickers. Lori moved that the committee approve up to
$150 for 50 bumper stickers and price them out. Five supported and
one opposed the motion. Jay offered to get a local quote for bumper
stickers and then get back to the committee.
iii. Songwriters' & Acoustic Nights - Timmy reported that Songwriters had
70 attending with 14 artists singing at the June concert. Acoustic had a
small crowd of 50 due to rain and moved indoors.
iv. Public Art- Jolyn contacted the owners of Radio Shack and they have
sent the request for corporate approval. She is in process of drawing up
a proposal with 3 artists' renderings for the building mural.
5. New Business
a. CARAC Summer Hiatus - the committee decided not to take a summer hiatus.
b. Committee Members - The City Commission reappointmented Jolyn, Tammy,
Cris, Lynne, Hollie to the committee. Jay was appointed to fill Carolyn
McCarthy's position that she resigned in October 2011.
c. Background Checks - Timmy advised the committee that the Board Member
Review Committee recommended to the City Commission that the Cultural Arts
and Recreation Advisory Committee be required to have criminal background
checks before appointment. This would apply to new members as well as
current sitting members. Timmy will send out the form to complete to
committee members.
d. Art moving sale - Karen described the idea of an "art sale" to help local artists
clean out their studios of artwork. Current exhibiter Kimberly Parvey and
Wannelle Parvey are interested in coordinating the event. The committee in
general liked the idea and Timmy will meet with the Parveys to work out
details.
e. Concerts in Johansen Park - Jolyn presented an idea to the committee to have
concerts with bands in Johansen Park. It could include dancing and rock `n'
roll. The event would need sponsors to pay for the bands and will need to work
with the neighbors (just like Arts in the Park). Jolyn will continue to explore
this and bring information back to the committee.
6. Other Agenda Items /Announcements
a. Next meeting - July 24, 2012
Adjournment - with no further business, Lynne motioned to adjourn the meeting and was
seconded by Jolyn. The chair adjourned the meeting at 6:45 p.m.
