Under footings, foundation bases or retaining walls, fill the unauthorized excavation by extending the indicated footing bottom elevation. Elsewhere, backfill and compact unauthorized excavation as specified for authorized excavations. 4. Dewatering: Prevent surface water and subsurface or groundwater from flowing into the excavations and flooding the project site. Do not allow water to accumulate in excavations. Remove water from excavations to prevent softening foundation bottoms, under-cutting footings, and soil changes detrimental to the stability of the subgrade and foundations. Provide dewatering systems as required to convey water away from excavations. Shore and brace all excavations to comply with local codes and authorities having jurisdiction. 5. If footing elevations should occur in a disturbed, unstable or unsuitable soil, the Architect/Engineer shall be notified. B. CONCRETE 1. Design, place and cure all concrete in accordance with ACI 318, ACI 304 and ACI 347, latest editions, publications of the American Concrete Institute. 2. Detail, fabricate and place all reinforcing bars and welded wire fabric in accordance with the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute's "Manual of Standard Practice". 3. All reinforcing bars shall conform to ASTM A615, or A616, grade 60; welded wire fabric shall conform to ASTM A185. 4. Submit shop drawings of all reinforcing for approval. 5. Design of formwork is the Contractor's responsibility. -2- 6. All concrete shall be 3,000 PSI at 28 days in accordance with ASTM C31 and C39. All cement shall be Portland Cement Type I, conforming to ASTM C150. All aggregates shall conform to ASTM C33. Maximum slump shall be five inches. Use air-entraining admix per ASTM C260 (3-6% air). All concrete shall contain a minimum of 5-bags of cement per cubic yard. 7. All reinforcing shall be held securely in position with standard accessories during placing of the concrete. All concrete shall be consolidated with mechanical vibrators per ACI 304. 8. Splices in reinforcing, where permitted, shall be as follows: Welded Wire Fabric ------------------------------- 6" All Other -------------------------------------------- 40 BAR.DIA. 9. All lintels shall be a minimum of 8"x8" concrete filled U-block and shall be reinforced with 245's, as a minimum, and shall have a minimum masonry end bearing of 8" 10. Splices in top reinforcing shall be made at mid span, hook bars at each end. 11. Splices in bottom reinforcing shall be made over supports. 12. Placing Concrete: Remove all water from excavation before placing concrete. Dry earth shall be wet thoroughly just prior to placing concrete. Place concrete before initial set has occurred, and in no case after the mix has retained water for more than 1-12/ hours. Use mechanical vibrators for placing concrete, in accordance with ACI 304. 13. All interior slabs shall receive a trowel finish and all exterior slabs shall receive a light broom finish, unless otherwise shown or noted. 14. Curing Concrete: Use one of the following methods: a. Water Curing: Keep concrete wet for seven day period by covering with water. See architectural drawings for additional requirements. b. Membrane Curing: Use on slabs after final finishing operations are complete (within 2 hours). Method and rate of applications shall be in strict accordance with the Manufacturer's published directions. Use "Crystal Clear Seal" by Lambert Corp., "Clear Bond" by Guardian Chemical Co., or equal. 15. Employ an independent testing laboratory experienced in design and testing of concrete materials to design concrete mixes and to test the concrete during the performance of the work. Test concrete as follows: a. Slump. ASTM C143, one test for each load at point of discharge. -3- 40 b. Compressive Strength Tests: ASTM C39, one set of three test cylinders for each 100 cubic yards (or less) of each mix, for each day's pour; one specimen tested at 7 days; one at 27 days; and one held in reserve. Submit test results in writing to owner and Architect/Engineer same day tests completed. C. MASONRY .. 1. All concrete masonry units shall conform to ASTM C90, grade N-1. All mortar shall conform to ASTM C270 Type M or S. All grout shall conform to ASTM C476 (use fine grout for spaces less than 4"). 2. Lay CMU units with full face shell mortar beds. Fill vertical end joints (end joints between units) solidly with mortar from face of unit to a distance behind face of unit not less than the thickness of longitudinal face shell. Provide 3/8" joints. Lay units in running bond. Add continuous horizontal joint reinforcing at 16" o.c. vertically, unless noted otherwise on the drawings; use Dur-o-Wall horizontal joint reinforcing, truss type (9 gage min.) per manufacturer's recommendations or approved equal. D. STRUCTURAL AND MISCELLANEOUS STEEL 1. All design, fabrication and erection of structural and miscellaneous steel shall conform to the American Institute of Steel Construction (AICS) publication, "Specifications for the Design, Fabrication, and Erection of Structural Steel for Building". All welding shall conform to the American Welding Society's Publication "AWS D1.1, Structural Welding Code". 2. Submit shop drawings of all structural steel for approval. 3. All structural steel to conform to ASTM A36. 4. Anchor bolts and bolts shall conform to ASTM A307. 5. Prepare all steel surfaces per SSPC specification No.3 and prime per SSPC Paint specification.No.Z. 6. Galvanizing: ASTM A123/A153/A386, as applicable. E. TIMBER 1. All timber work shall be in accordance with the current edition of the "National Specifications for Stress-Grade Lumber and its Fastenings", a publication of the National Forest Products Association. -4- 2. All nailing of structural members not otherwise noted shall conform to the nailing schedule of the "Manual for House Framing", a publication of the National Forest Products Association. 3. All timber connectors, strap ties, hurricane anchors, joist hangers, etc., shall be manufactured by the Simpson Co. of San Leandro, California or equal, stainless steel type 316. Use stainless steel nails with connectors. 4. Wood joists and rafters shall have bridging at 8'-0" centers, unless otherwise noted. Bridging shall be 2" wide and the full depth of joist or rafter. 5. All plywood shall comply with PS-1 (ANSI A199.1). Use "exterior" APA rated plywood for wall sheathing. Comply with applicable recommendations contained in Form No. E 304, "APA Design/Construction Guide- Residential &Commercial", for types of plywood products and applications indicated. Fasten plywood panels by nailing to framing unless otherwise indicated. Use stainless steel nails for exterior wall sheathing. 6. Where lumber is indicated at "P.T." or "Pressure Treated", or is specified herein to be treated, comply with the applicable requirements of AWPA standards C2 for lumber, and of AWPB standards listed below. Make each item with AWPB quality mark requirements. Pressure treat all above and ground framing and decking exposed to the weather or noted with water-borne preservatives conforming to AWPB LP-2. After treatment, kiln dry to a maximum moisture content of 19 percent. 7. Fasteners & Anchorages: Provide size, type and material indicated and per applicable standards, complying with the applicable federal specifications for nails, screws, bolts, nuts, washers and anchorage devices. All fasteners and anchorages shall be stainless steel. 8. Glue Laminated Beams: Materials, fabrications and quality control shall conform to ANSI/RITC A190.1-1983, "Structural Glued Laminated Timber". Provide factory-glued structural units produced by an AITC-licensed firm, qualified to apply the AITC "Quality Inspected" mark. Use Douglas Fir or Southern Pine; adhesive shall comply with ANSI/RITC A190.1-1983, using wet-use (waterproof) adhesive. Allowable stresses shall be as follows: Fb=2,400 psi; Ft=1,200 psi; Fv=165 psi; and E=1,700,000 psi. END -5- EDWARDS RESIDENCE STRUCTURAL FRAMING NOTES 1.
