Subject:Atlantic Village Panera - Excavation and Backfill Report Importance: High Paula, Our engineer reviewed the building pad density reports and responded with comments below: There are a couple issues with the report that just may be typos or indicate that we are missing information or a combination of both. 1) The Proctor test results(Report of Moisture—Density Relationship of Soil) indicated a max dry density of 104.2 pcf with an optimum moisture of 12.8%.The first test report, Lift 1, is comparing the field results to a proctor 2 sample with a max dry density of 107.1 pcf @ 13.0%moisture. It looks like we are missing the proctor report for the sample that Lift 1 is being compared with. 2) Secondly, the retest of lift 1 was compared to a sample with proctor results of 104.1 pcf at 12.9%moisture.This doesn't match the proctor test provided or the proctor results previously reported for Lift 1. I think Universal is trying to say that Lift 1 was retested and passed, and the subsequent lifts all passed, but the reports don't make sense as presented. Correct, lift 1 was retested and showed passing densities. The density reports are being revised to refer to the correct proctor value. Additionally, after reviewing the HAI report, I'm concerned with the backfill for the excavations performed for the removal of the contaminated soil and debris. It seems like there were excavations up to 6 feet deep. Are there any density reports for the backfill of these excavations? I don't have any site plans so I don't know if the contaminated soil/debris excavations extended below the building footprint. If so, and there are no densities for backfill, I'd likely recommend performing additional borings to confirm that the backfill was compacted. It is my understanding that there were small isolated spots where up to 6 feet of trash was removed, but the most of the overexcavation was to about 4 feet. We did not test the small isolated areas but began testing once there was an approximate level surface. Therefore we tested a total of 4 lifts of backfill, all of which indicated passing densities. Lastly, I'd like to review the geotechnical report. If the geotechnical report recommends undercutting or proofrolling of the exposed subgrade, there may have been some work that should have been done prior to the construction of the building pad. There is not a requirement for proofrolling the site. It was recommended to remove the trash and backfill in lifts to 95%density. Can you please provide me a link to the plans, specs, and geo report? I would be able to comment a little more but it still seems like there are issues with what was completed so far. Can you provide the additional information that Travis is requesting? Thanks! Soil Description: Brown fine sand Subgrade Review: Terracon observed the foundation locations which previously failed nuclear gauge density testing on July 21 and 22nd due to excessive moisture. Terracon observed that the foundation subgrade along the entire eastern continuous footer and the northwest column pad had been overexcavated approximately 6 to 8 inches. Terracon probed the exposed subgrade and was unable to advance the probe more than 1 to 2 inches. Based on Terracon's observations the foundation subgrade was suitable for the backfill of#57 stone to the foundation bearing elevation. Terracon observed the backfill of the #57 stone in the undercut areas was placed in accordance with Terracon's recommendations. Observation Results: Based on our observations, the foundation subgrade preparation at the above-referenced locations appeared to be in general accordance with the project plans and specifications.
