Resolution No. 15-05 RESOLUTION NO. 15-05 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH, FLORIDA SUPPORTING FUNDING FOR THE ST.JOHNS RIVER FERRY WHEREAS, the value of the St. Johns River Ferry has proven to be an asset to the community and is a critical transportation link for many in Northeast Florida; and WHEREAS, the St. Johns River Ferry is an important part of the history of our community and is a proponent of the tourism industry. The ferry serves largely as a commuter ferry during the week and as a tourist ferry on the weekends, serving over 225,000 riders; and WHEREAS, the St. Johns River Ferry is an important mode of transportation for local residents and businesses in the vicinity and has been identified in the top list of mass transit projects in the 2015 adopted North Florida Transportation Planning Organization List of Priority Projects (LOPP) as it connects historic State Road Al A; and WHEREAS, in 2014, the St. Johns River Ferry was awarded a$3.9 million Ferry Passenger Grant from the Federal Transit Administration, which was matched by a$1 million appropriation by the state on the Governor's 2015-2016 budget. These funds are needed to replace portions of the slip walls and fenders in the docks; and WHEREAS, the south ferry landing is adjacent to Mayport Naval Station and the Village of Mayport, a fishing village. The north bank ferry landing is one-half mile from a major shipyard that provides dry dock and repair services throughout the year to ships at Mayport Naval Station. The St. Johns Ferry supports both large and small businesses on both sides of the river and continued funding is needed in order to keep the ferry operational. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Commission of the City of Atlantic Beach, Florida strongly supports funding for the continuation of the St. Johns River Ferry.
