1-26-16 . ;.., ,i,„T.) 1 s NQ 9r CULTURAL ARTS and RECREATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH Meeting Minutes Tuesday,January 26, 2016 Adele Grage Cultural Center Present: Grant Healy,Pamela White, Nick Malie,Jay Wilson and Lou Catania, Timmy Johnson (City liaison), Della Giovanni(Secretary) Absent: none 1. Call to order- Chair called the meeting to order- 6:05pm 2. Approval of Meeting Minutes—Nick motioned and Pam seconded to approve the minutes of September 1, 2015. The minutes were unanimously approved. 3. Two visitors attended the meeting: Chris Jorgensen and Mayor Reeves. a. Mr.Jorgensen addressed the committee as a concerned citizen who attends all other city meetings and showed interest in having more city activities at Tideviews Park now that the city has purchased the Bennett property. b. Mr.Jorgensen praised the city on the clearing of park and is happy to see more people going to park to enjoy its beauty. c. Requests that the city have a family adventure that would include canoe/kayak trips possibly from Tideviews to Dutton Island and back, sponsor a family picnic at Dutton Island. d. Would like to see the city utilize our parks more for city events. e. Recommend having Acoustic Night at Tideviews. f. Regarding criticism: made mention how emails of criticism are made known to the public but when there is a compliment,they aren't shared. When someone is complimented within the city from a citizen, Mr.Jorgensen feels it should be shared with others. g. Mayor Reeves spoke regarding his term and his goal to visit every committee and board meeting once a quarter to see how things are running and how we can make them better. i. Mayor Reeves has asked Commissioner Stinson, in a public meeting,to review the concerns of the Recreation Committee and how to make improvements. ii. How do we get"younger people" on board/interested? iii. Concern for Arts in the Park,i.e.how to improve the event? 2 day event?A Friday kickoff event? Food trucks, different musicians iv. Campout- 50%attendance lower,possible date change (Jay commented that the mail is too slow and half of the events for the month have gone by,by the time they get the mailer) v. Offer more programs for kids i.e.junior tennis lessons for kids Offer more programs for senior citizens i.e. pickelball vi. Mayor Reeves mentioned that city staff have not been involved with events; Mayor stated the new commission will be involved 1. 1st Night, New Year's Eve idea for families; 2. New ideas but no one wants to take them on 3. Be a part of a committee and participate don't just be a part 4. Wants to see police more involved for kids, ie:AITP-canine unit? 5. Thinks the committee should have a non-voting staff member, suggested Officer Anderson 4. Timmy Johnson spoke to the committee about sending in information on prospects for additional committee members. He will be meeting with Commissioner Stinson Thursday, would like committee members' opinions on what does not work, does the day or time need to change? a. Budget Proposals in March,bring ideas to meeting for approval 5. Grant mentioned to do a few events and do them right instead of taking on too much 6. Timmy stated the next Acoustic Night is in March and that the committee should sign up for "Notify Me",which gives a calendar of upcoming events. 7. Ongoing Business a. Songwriters' concert was on January 17th. There were 62 attendees with 14 performers. Next concert is February 21St. The Acoustic Night will be held on March 20th b. Artisans' Faire-Pam reviewed the success of having 16 artists a. Good advertising,good music,platter of sandwiches donated by Angies Subs b. Only 2 committee members attended- disappointing, more members should have been present c. Surveyed vendors after/suggestions to improve: parking for artists and better lighting to show community that something was going on,artists reported a successful show Arts in the Park-The committee voted on the applicants,parking a concern, 2 tents of music(12 groups) with assistance from Mike Shackelford Grant suggested an additional meeting in March to further plan AITP 8. New Business a. Jay presented a proposal for a Bocce Ball tournament; reviewed the proposal and logistics; can get sponsors to help fund the event Nick motioned and Pam seconded to approve the event and that the event should be held in about 3 months,possible registrations at AITP. The motion was unanimously approved. 9. Adjournment-with no further business, Lou moved and Jay seconded the motion to adjourn ot - , eeting.
