Dear Mr. Lane,
This letter concerns the pergola for the referenced project. Per FEMA, the pergola must be designed to
break free under the larger of the design wind load or 1Opsf. However, if the design loading exceeds
20psf, certification is required by a registered engineer that the structure will collapse under a water load
associated with a base flood event. The wind pressures for this location exceed 20psf.
The 100 year storm design grade for this location is EL5.5. The existing grade is at approximately
EL14.25. The bottom of the pergola posts are at approximately EL9.75. Therefore, the pergola will
collapse and break up at a flood load much weaker than the design base flood.
I certify the structure will collapse under a water load associated with a base flood event.
Sincerely, IL O B Y
