Dear Bill,
During construction of the above referenced structure's floor system, several plumbing holes were drilled into
existing reinforced joists. Several joists were also notched to allow some existing tongue and groove decking to
remain. I have visited the site, assessed the joists for the holes and done supplemental calculations on the
notched joists. To summarize, all conditions, as they existed during my site visit on June 13,2016,are
acceptable.To elaborate:
• The 4" holes: I addressed these holes in previous letter communications. The existing 2x10 joists had to
be extended to stretch to a new length.The original permit indicated adding a 2x10xl4' scab to each face
of the existing joist, with the ends of the scabs bearing in buckets at the new steel beam. A piece of 2x10
filler was installed between the scabbed pieces.This repair was far beyond what was required, but it was
best for construction.We assessed the 4" holes and their effect on the moment of inertia and section
modulus. Al the locations of the holes, the joists remain strong enough by a large factor.
• The 54"long notch: until yesterday,this problem hadn't been made clear to AGC. In the living room area,
where the 2x10 joists were extended as described above,there was an area where the original
construction included T&G sheathing being installed. That sheathing was left in place, so the repaired
joists were trimmed down 2", essentially making the joists an equivalent depth of(2)2x8 starting at the
steel beam and extending 54" into the joist. Analyzing the joist within that 54"inches, the joists are still
sufficient for bending and shear. Deflection is not a concern so close to the bearing point.
