The City requires a mitigation ratio of one diameter inch planted or preserved for every two diameter inches removed. With a circumference of 13.5 feet, that comes out to 51.6 inches in diameter. This would mean that you need to provide 25.8 inches of mitigation. One way to provide the required mitigation is with preservation of existing trees. In the application you mention several other trees on the property, but you did not provide the diameters (you can provide circumference if that is easier for you, just specify which is used). Not all trees qualify for preservation credit though. Once you provide the information for the other trees, then I can update the mitigation calculation. Another way to provide required mitigation is by planting new trees. Basically each inch planted counts as one inch of mitigation. There is a select list of trees called Legacy Trees that receive double credit. Those are Bald Cypress, Southern Red Cedar, Eastern Red Cedar, Winged Elm, Florida Elm, Live Oak, Pecan, Pignut Hickory, Loblolly Bay, Southern Magnolia, Sweetbay Magnolia, Red Maple, Florida Maple, and Tupelo. So a 4 inch Red Maple is worth 8 inches of mitigation. We do have lists of other recommended trees that can be used for mitigation. Let us know if you need that list. If for some reason the mitigation cannot be met by preservation and planting, there is an option to pay into the City's Tree Fund that is used to plant trees elsewhere in the City. At least half of all mitigation most occur on property before the Tree Fund option can be utilized. Mitigation in the Tree Fund is calculated at $123.00 per inch. At this point, I need the information on the other trees on the property and information on any plantings that are planned including type, size and location shown on a site plan. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Sincerely, Derek W. Reeves Planner
