Atlantic Beach
Country Club
July 20, 2016
City of Atlantic Beach,
Atlantic Beach Country Club is seeking to remove a large oak tree and several smaller trees in order to
create a new tee box that will lengthen the golf course. When the Club was awarded the Web.com Tour
Championship, we had to lengthen the course to meet the demands of the tournament. We looked
extensively around the course and determined that an area in the far northeast corner was the most
logical place to add length to the course. Also, since completion of the new course, the Club has
received complaints that golfers frequently use a small wooded area in the far northeast comer of the
course as an open air restroom.
As part of this project, we are able to clear the area to prevent it from being used as a restroom and also
extend a tee box to lengthen the course. The project will unfortunately require the removal of a
substantial oak tree on site. This tree is 36 inches in diameter. Other smaller trees will be removed as
well, including an 18 inch oak, 10 inch oak, 8 inch oak, and two very small trees. According to the
Atlantic Beach Tree Code, only the 36" oak is considered a legacy tree and therefore protected under
the code. We intend to mitigate for the loss of this tree with new oak plantings. The code requires that
oak trees are replaced with other "legacy trees". We intend to plant at least 18 inches of new oak trees
in order to mitigate at the required ratio of 1 inch for every 2 inches removed.
We greatly value the aesthetics of the course and intend to plant the new oaks in more visible areas. We
are committed to being a part of the Atlantic Beach community for a long time, and believe that these
new oak plantings will ultimately grow to a size much larger than the trees being removed for this
project. As always, we appreciate your cooperation with the Atlantic Beach Country Club.
Sincerely,
Obert A. Stone, Jr., CCM, CCE
